The first Test between South Africa and Australia began on Friday, October 9 2026, at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban, but the sparse stands quickly became a talking point. Ticket sales for day one reached just over 7,500, a figure that has renewed questions about the long-term health of red-ball cricket in South Africa.

Kingsmead holds 25,000 spectators, so fewer than a third of the available seats were occupied for a match featuring the reigning World Test Championship holders against one of the sport’s most competitive touring nations. Cricket South Africa officials have previously acknowledged that Test match crowds at venues outside fixtures against high-profile opponents such as England remain a persistent challenge, even as limited-overs internationals continue to attract reasonable support.

A Friday morning start at 9:30 a.m. compounded the situation. With the working week in full swing, a large portion of the potential local audience was unavailable during the opening and middle sessions of the day, restricting the crowd that could realistically attend.

How does this compare with recent cricket at Kingsmead?

The gap between white-ball and red-ball support at the same venue is striking. When Kingsmead staged a season-opening ODI against Australia on September 24 2026, a public holiday, around 12,000 supporters came through the gates. That figure represented roughly half the ground’s capacity, yet it was still well ahead of what the Test match drew on its opening day.

The Durban Test is only the fourth Test the city has hosted since 2019, highlighting how rarely the longest format has returned to Kingsmead in recent years. The infrequent scheduling of Test cricket at the venue may be contributing to the difficulty of sustaining a regular local audience for the format, as supporters have had limited opportunity to build a habit of attending.

What is the broader context of this Test series?

The three-match series forms part of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle, meaning every result carries direct implications for the standings. South Africa, the current WTC title holders, fielded a full-strength XI with Temba Bavuma leading the side. Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, David Bedingham, Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj completed the lineup, while Anrich Nortje made his return to Test cricket for the first time since March 2023.

Kagiso Rabada was absent after sustaining a hamstring injury during training in August, though the team remained hopeful he would be fit for the second Test. Australia arrived with their own injury concerns: Cameron Green was ruled out with an abdominal strain picked up during the third ODI, and Josh Inglis was unavailable due to a fractured finger.

The second Test is scheduled for 18-October 22 at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, where organisers will be hoping for a stronger turnout as the series progresses.
