South Africa captain Temba Bavuma believes the upcoming Test series against Australia will bring out the best in both teams as the Proteas prepare for another major challenge in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

South Africa have already defeated India in India in the current WTC cycle and are now set to host Australia before taking on England later in the summer. The upcoming assignments could prove crucial for several players, including Bavuma, as South Africa look to build on their success in the longest format.

The rivalry between South Africa and Australia has produced several closely fought contests over the years. In the last 20 years, the two teams have played nine Test series, with both sides winning four each, while the 2011-12 series in South Africa ended in a draw. South Africa also defeated Australia in the 2025 WTC final.

Bavuma believes facing Australia brings an added competitive edge because of the history and intensity associated with the rivalry.

“When you play against Australia, you don’t just play against those individuals, you don’t just play against those individuals, you play against what it means to be Australian. It’s always a clash we look forward to. It tends to at least bring out the competitive edge of both teams. We have a strong desire to get the better of them,” Bavuma was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.

The South African skipper also acknowledged Australia’s dominance over the years but insisted that his team will take confidence from their recent success against them.

“We give them a lot of respect but we also take confidence in that we’ve been able to get the better of them. The respect lies in the fact that they’ve been very dominant over the years,” he added.

Bavuma expects the series to produce several individual battles, particularly between the two bowling attacks and opposing batting units.

“On the field itself, there will be massive moments and massive clashes. Their batting attack, our bowling attack, their bowling attack versus what our batting attack can do – there’s opportunities for guys to take each other on and really make the play for the team. The WTC final showed that.”

Bavuma stresses importance of fast bowling in South Africa

South Africa’s victory over Australia in the 2025 WTC final underlined their ability to compete against one of the world’s strongest Test teams. Despite entering the contest as underdogs, the Proteas overcame a 74-run first-innings deficit and successfully chased down a challenging target at Lord’s.

Bavuma believes one of the defining characteristics of South African cricket should continue to be the quality of its fast bowlers. With the upcoming series being played at slower coastal venues, the Proteas have nevertheless recalled Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee to strengthen their pace attack.

Nortje is returning to Test cricket after more than three years, while Coetzee last featured in the format two years ago. They will join Corbin Bosch and Marco Jansen in South Africa’s bowling group.

“Part of it is bringing back the aspect of fast bowlers. Countries or players must know when they come into South Africa, they’re going to deal with fast bowling,” Bavuma said.

South Africa willing to adapt to changing cricket landscape

Bavuma also spoke about the changing priorities of modern cricketers and how South Africa are attempting to balance individual interests with the team’s larger objectives.

Players such as Simon Harmer, who previously took a Kolpak deal, and Nortje and Quinton de Kock, who have prioritised franchise cricket at different stages, remain part of the wider conversation around player availability.

However, Bavuma insisted that South Africa’s approach is to select the best players available rather than hold on to past grievances.

“We accept that everyone has their interests. The world of cricket now is different to what it was ten years ago. Then, the sentiment of playing for your country was the ultimate. Now, the interests are a little bit different.”

The South Africa captain added that despite those changing priorities, the team remains focused on finding common ground.

“We are accepting of all of that, but we still find a way for us to embrace whatever our common cause as a team is.”

With Australia and England still to come in the current WTC cycle, South Africa have a major opportunity to further establish themselves as one of the strongest Test teams in the world. The upcoming Australia series, in particular, could provide another test of whether Bavuma’s side can continue their recent success against the biggest names in Test cricket.
