Dinesh Karthik worries about one-sided T20I matches after India’s dominant win

India secured an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the first T20I at Lucknow on October 6, 2026, chasing down 172 runs in 14.4 overs to take the lead in the five-match series. Shreyas Iyer‘s unbeaten 102 off 43 balls, featuring 10 fours and 6 sixes, powered the successful chase. The remaining four T20Is are scheduled for Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru on October 9, 11, 14 and 17 respectively.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik expressed serious reservations about the quality of cricket on display, particularly regarding the pattern of one-sided contests across the bilateral series. He highlighted that all three preceding ODIs had also been heavily skewed in India’s favour, with high-scoring totals and dominant victories.

The Indian T20I team is on a 10-match winning streak, and most of them were convincing victories, including 100-run wins against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka and comfortable chases against Zimbabwe and West Indies.

“For me, the bigger worry in the bigger context would be, are these games getting a bit too meaningless? In the sense that 170 is scored, and the other team is chasing it in 15 overs. Is the pitch so flat that the batters are wreaking havoc? That is something that we need to see,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

“Why is it that the teams are not competing? What would it take for West Indies to compete? I don’t think that’s India’s job because they are there to win the bilateral series,” he added.

Pitch quality and competitive balance in bilateral cricket

Karthik emphasised that a score of 170 should ordinarily present a stiff challenge in T20 cricket, but the flat nature of the Lucknow pitch had rendered it vulnerable to aggressive batting. He stressed that pitches offering assistance to spinners would have created a more competitive contest and made for more engaging viewing.

“How interesting is it to watch if a lot of the games are becoming one-sided? All 3 ODIs were pretty much one-sided and high-scoring. Here, 170 is a good, decent score, but very easily chased down,”

“If the pitch had something in it for the spinners, then it was a decent score. But on flat pitches, they are coming in and smashing it and finishing in 15 overs. That worries me for the long run; that is not a good sign,” he added.

Karthik’s remarks underscored a fundamental issue in bilateral cricket: the balance between bat and ball on match surfaces. The absence of conditions that would have challenged India’s batters had allowed them to dominate proceedings with minimal resistance from West Indies’ bowling attack. His concerns reflected broader questions about pitch preparation and the competitive value of one-sided contests in international cricket.
