Australian women’s cricketer Ashleigh Gardner has spoken publicly about the personal crisis that engulfed her in recent months. The 29-year-old vice-captain remains in her leadership position with the national team despite the controversy. Gardner is a two-time Belinda Clark medallist and featured in Australia’s Women’s World Cup campaign in India in 2025.
Gardner issued her first public statement in August 2026, acknowledging the separation and personal pain caused by the situation. On October 6, 2026, Gardner broke her silence in an interview with The Australian, discussing the impact on her public standing.
“My reputation has been tarnished with the public, but I guess something that I always try to strive to do when representing any team that I play in is be the best teammate that I can, and hopefully show what this team means to me when I’m playing for them,” Gardner was quoted as saying by The West Australian.
How Gardner views the impact on her reputation
Gardner reflected on the unexpected scale of public interest in her personal life. She admitted her initial thinking about the situation was naive and expressed surprise at how the matter became so public. The cricketer explained how athletes in the public eye face scrutiny beyond their professional performance.
“Playing sport at a high level, you’re open to having a platform, and sometimes with this comes interest from the public, and they want to know things about your personal life, and they invest, and then can make judgment either way of what you are or aren’t doing,” Gardner said.
Gardner’s reflection on public scrutiny and personal responsibility
Gardner expressed confidence in her relationship with her teammates despite the controversy. She indicated that those closest to her understand her character beyond the recent events. The cricketer focused on moving forward and demonstrating her commitment to the team.
“I certainly didn’t expect the situation to take the path that it did, or to become as public as what it did. But I also understand that everyone has their own way of dealing with difficult situations. I guess for me, the important thing (is) over this last period, I’ve obviously had time to reflect on what’s happened and making sure to have those conversations with the people that I’ve needed to, whether that’s internally and just focus on moving forward for the team. I think (that) is the most important thing,” Gardner added.

What Gardner says about her teammates’ support
“I know deep down (my teammates) still think that I’m a good person and I’ve just made some poor decisions. I guess that’s the best thing, and being able to reflect on that has been really important for me,” Gardner said.
Neither Gardner, Voll nor Cricket Australia has formally confirmed or denied the allegations. Australia Women are scheduled to play Bangladesh in the first of three ODIs in Brisbane on October 11, 2026, with Gardner’s continued selection and leadership role tested as the team moves forward from the controversy.
