Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named captain of India’s seven-man squad for the Hong Kong Sixes 2026, scheduled to run from October 30 to November 1, 2026. The selection marks a notable return to representative cricket for the seamer, who has accumulated 229 international appearances across 21 Tests, 121 ODIs and 87 T20Is over his career.
India have been placed in Pool C alongside Pakistan and the UAE. Pool winners advance to the Cup semi-finals, second-placed teams go to the Plate semi-finals and third-placed teams drop into the Bowl competition. The format fields six players per side, with each innings lasting six overs and one designated bowler permitted to send down two of those overs.
India’s record at the revived tournament makes for difficult reading. Since the Hong Kong Sixes returned in 2024, they have crashed out at the group stage on both occasions, losing nine of their ten matches across the two editions. At the 2025 tournament, they finished last in Pool C without a single win from three matches. Their only title in the competition came back in 2005.
What does Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recent form suggest about his role in the squad?
Bhuvneshwar represents Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. In the IPL final in May 2026, he dismissed both Sai Sudharsan and Jason Holder as RCB defeated Gujarat Titans to lift the title. That showing confirmed that, at 36, he retains the ability to perform under pressure in short-format cricket.
His 229 international caps make him the most experienced player in the squad by a considerable margin. In the six-over format, where every delivery carries extra weight, his skill at moving the ball and hitting the right lengths gives India a reliable bowling option. His leadership experience at franchise level adds further value in the captain’s role.
How does India’s Pool C draw affect their chances of reaching the Cup semi-finals?
India’s toughest group assignment is a meeting with Pakistan, who claimed their sixth title at the 2025 Hong Kong Sixes by defeating Kuwait in the final. Pakistan arrive as defending champions and represent the clearest obstacle between India and a top-of-pool finish.
To reach the Cup semi-finals, India must win Pool C outright, a target that has proved beyond them in both editions since the tournament’s return. A second-place finish would redirect them to the Plate semi-finals instead. Given that they have won only one of their last ten group-stage matches, simply advancing beyond the pool stage would mark a meaningful step forward for this squad. However, this has to be one of the strongest sides they have ever fielded in the tournament’s history.
