The third ODI between India and West Indies played in Mullanpur on Saturday, October 3, 2026, extended to nine hours from its afternoon start. Both teams faced in-game penalties after failing to complete overs within the scheduled time. Multiple breaks due to scorching conditions and lack of effort to push overs through contributed to the extended run time.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik expressed concern about the match duration while speaking on Cricbuzz. Karthik highlighted the need for the International Cricket Council and all stakeholders to address why a 50-over game requires such extended time.

“Yes, it’s nine hours, and I do feel that it is a bit long. I do think ICC and everyone involved should clamp down on why does it take for a 50-over game to go 9 hours. Ideally, it should be 7 hours with a break in between as well. Even if you extend it to 8 hours, it is okay,” Karthik said on the above mentioned source.

Why Karthik believes ODI games need to be shorter?

Karthik further elaborated on the broader implications of extended match durations for the one-day format. He connected the lengthy games to declining interest in ODI cricket and emphasised the responsibility of players and administrators to maintain the format’s appeal.

“In this day and age, when we are trying to shrink everything and make it shorter, I don’t think it makes sense to have a one-day game for 9 hours, and then on the other hand we are constantly asking why ODI cricket is failing, why no one is interested in being part of this format. This is the reason. I think the pace of play needs to be looked at. Yes, it is a hot day, that is a given, but to have a game go on for 9 hours is not helping this format stay afloat,” Karthik said.

The impact of extended match duration on the format

Ajinkya Rahane also commented on the match duration and pace of play. The India batter reflected on the experience from a player’s perspective and the impact on spectators watching the contest.

“It felt like this match went on for 2 days, it felt that long. Actually, the match was really good. But the way it went on for so long, you have to see it from the fans’ point of view as well. Some strict rules have to be introduced, it is the players’ and the ICC’s responsibility to implement and follow the rules,” Rahane said.

India had already secured the three-match ODI series with a 2-0 lead following their eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the second ODI at Guwahati on September 30, 2026. The third match took place after the series outcome had been decided.
