India captain Shubman Gill said his side still have clear areas to address in ODI cricket despite winning their series against West Indies, pointing specifically to their fielding and death-bowling execution as concerns ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Gill was named Player of the Series for his 334 runs, which included an unbeaten double-century in a successful chase of 406. In the final match on Saturday, however, he was dismissed early after edging a Jayden Seales delivery to Shai Hope, who dived full stretch to his left to take a one-handed catch. Gill acknowledged his disappointment but said there was little he could have done about that particular delivery.

“I mean, you’re always disappointed whenever you get out early, but I think today I don’t think there could have been much that I would have done on that ball,” Gill said at the post-match presentation.

Despite the series result, Gill was candid about the team’s shortcomings, pointing to the side’s fielding throughout the series as an area which would need focus for the future matches.

“Decently pleased [with the progress],” he said, before adding: “But I think there are still some areas [of improvement] – I think our fielding could be much better. Overall in the series, I think we dropped six or seven catches, which is not a good sign leading up to the World Cup. You want your fielding to be top-notch,” Gill said.

What did Gill say about India’s death-bowling clarity?

Gill’s concern about death bowling centred on the team’s uncertainty over field placements and bowling intent when the opposition had lost several wickets. He described it as a recurring issue in one-day cricket that India needs to resolve before the 2027 World Cup.

“I feel sometimes we are not really clear whether we are attacking or we are defending, especially when we are bowling in the death overs. One-day[ers] is such a game, if the opposition is five or six down, you are never really sure what fields to take, whether we are going for the death too early or we are still, you know, bowling kind of like middle overs. I think these are some areas which definitely we need to be better at,” Gill said.

The slow over-rate in the final match added to the bowling challenges. India were penalised after the 46th over and had to bowl the closing deliveries with only four fielders on the boundary instead of the usual five. Gill acknowledged the impact this had on the result.

“I think the game was in control. But you know, being behind four overs with this and then in the last, I think they took the game away from us. Had we, you know, not been short on the overs, I think the game might have gone to the last over,” Gill said.

How did India use this series to explore bowling options?

India were without Jasprit Bumrah, who was on Asian Games duty, and Hardik Pandya, who was injured, throughout the series. Coach Gautam Gambhir acknowledged the limited number of ODI fixtures remaining before the 2027 World Cup, and the team’s XI selections reflected a clear intent to identify and develop bowling options alongside winning matches.

Mohammed Siraj played only one of the three matches and did not bowl in the death overs even in that game. In New Chandigarh, debutant Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar and offspinner Naman Dhir all bowled in the final ten overs. In Guwahati, debutant Auqib Nabi contributed in the back end of the innings in a match where 405 was chased down to finish at 406, a game in which bowlers from both sides were under pressure throughout in conditions that offered them little assistance.

In the final match on Saturday, India chose to bat first and recovered from 4 for 2 to post 351. Gill said he was happy with the total but the slow over-rate penalty and the fielding lapses across the series underlined the work that remains ahead of next year’s tournament.
