Ishan Kishan becomes second Indian batter to score 1000 T20I runs in a calendar year

Ishan Kishan became the second Indian batter to score 1000 T20I runs in a calendar year, reaching the milestone during the Asian Games 2026 final on October 3 at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. The wicketkeeper-batter closed out his 2026 tally at 1005 runs, compiled at a strike rate of 169.47.

In the final itself, Kishan contributed 20 runs off 18 balls at a strike rate of 111.11 before being bowled by Arafat Minhas. Those runs were sufficient to carry him past the 1000-run threshold for the year, placing him in a small and select group of batters to have achieved the feat in T20I cricket. India’s opponents in that final were Pakistan, making the occasion a high-stakes setting for the milestone to be reached.

The achievement underlines the volume and consistency Kishan maintained across T20I assignments throughout 2026, with his tally of 1005 runs spread across multiple matches in the calendar year.

Who is the only other Indian batter to have scored 1000 T20I runs in a calendar year?

Suryakumar Yadav is the only other Indian batter to have crossed 1000 T20I runs in a single calendar year. He accumulated 1164 runs during 2022 at a strike rate of 187.43, setting the Indian benchmark that stood until Kishan surpassed the four-figure mark in 2026.

Kishan’s strike rate of 169.47 is lower than Suryakumar’s 187.43 from 2022, though both figures place the two Indian batters well clear of the global average for high-volume T20I scorers across a full calendar year. The gap in run totals — 1164 for Suryakumar against 1005 for Kishan — reflects the difference in the number of innings each batter had available to them in their respective record years. Nevertheless, Kishan’s entry into this exclusive company confirms his standing as one of the most prolific T20I batters India has produced in the format’s modern era.

Where does Ishan Kishan’s tally rank among all batters to score 1000-plus T20I runs in a calendar year?

The list of batters to reach 1000 or more T20I runs in a calendar year spans several nations. Mohammad Rizwan of Pakistan scored 1326 runs in 2021 at a strike rate of 135.03. Karanbir Singh, listed as representing Austria, scored 1472 runs in 2025 at a strike rate of 174.2, which is the highest single-year aggregate on record. Fiaz Ahmed of Bahrain scored 1251 runs in 2025 at a strike rate of 133.08.

Kishan’s 1005 runs in 2026 represent the lowest aggregate on this list, though his strike rate of 169.47 is the second highest among all the batters featured, sitting behind only Karanbir Singh’s 174.2 from 2025. That combination of volume and scoring rate gives Kishan’s entry on the list a distinctive character relative to the other names alongside him. While Rizwan and Fiaz Ahmed both surpassed Kishan in raw run totals, neither matched his scoring tempo, underlining that Kishan’s 2026 calendar year was defined as much by the manner of his run-scoring as by the quantity.
