Ishan Kishan has gone past Virat Kohli’s tally of seven fifty-plus scores in T20Is during 2016, registering his eighth fifty-plus score of the year with an unbeaten 80 off 46 balls in the Asian Games semifinal against Sri Lanka at Aichi-Nagoya, Japan on October 1.
The knock, which included four boundaries and five sixes, came at a strike rate of 173.91. India were in a difficult position at 87 for 4 when Kishan walked in on a challenging surface, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson both managing single-digit scores. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had contributed 38 off 21 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes, but India needed more. Kishan’s innings lifted India to 169 for 7 in 20 overs.
Sri Lanka, in reply, were bowled out cheaply. Nuwanidu Fernando, with 15, was the only Sri Lanka batter to reach double figures. Axar Patel took 2 for 8, Jasprit Bumrah claimed 2 for 7, Abhishek Sharma finished with 2 for 2, and Washington Sundar added 1 for 18. There were three run-outs as well in the innings.
How does Ishan Kishan’s 2026 T20I record compare with Suryakumar Yadav’s 2022 benchmark?
Across 28 T20Is and innings in 2026, Ishan Kishan has scored 985 runs at an average of 37.88 and a strike rate of 171.3, including one century and seven fifties. He now needs just 80 more runs to surpass Suryakumar Yadav’s record of most T20I runs in a calendar year by an Indian batter.
Suryakumar Yadav set that benchmark in 2022, scoring 1,164 runs in 31 T20Is at an average of 46.56, which included two centuries and nine fifties. Suryakumar also holds the record for the most fifty-plus scores by an Indian batter in a single T20I calendar year, with nine in 2022.
Kishan’s eight fifty-plus scores in 2026 have already moved him past Kohli’s seven from 2016, and he is now one fifty-plus score away from equalling Suryakumar’s nine.
Where does Ishan Kishan’s 2026 tally stand in the wider T20I calendar-year records?
The record for most T20I runs in a calendar year by a batter from a Test-playing nation belongs to Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan, who scored 1,326 runs in 29 matches and 26 innings in 2021 at an average of 73.66 and a strike rate of over 134, with one century and 12 fifties.
The overall record for most T20I runs in a calendar year by any batter belongs to Karanbir Singh of Austria, who accumulated 1,488 runs in 32 matches and innings in 2025 at an average of 51.31 and a strike rate of over 174, with two centuries and 13 fifties.
Kishan’s current tally of 985 runs in 2026 means he would need to surpass 1,164 runs to break the Indian record held by Suryakumar, and would need to go well beyond that to challenge Rizwan’s mark among Test-playing nations.
