Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been named in India’s playing XI for the second semi-final of the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games 2026. India will face Sri Lanka at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, on Thursday, October 1, with the T20 fixture scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM IST. Shreyas Iyer will lead the Indian side, with Sanju Samson taking up the wicketkeeping duties.

Sooryavanshi comes into the XI as a top-order batter and will open alongside Abhishek Sharma. India have also brought Jasprit Bumrah back into the team for the knockout clash, while Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi form the rest of the playing XI.

How did India and Sri Lanka reach the semifinal?

Both India and Sri Lanka progressed to the last four without completing their respective quarterfinal matches, as persistent rain disrupted the schedule at the Asian Games. India’s quarterfinal against Afghanistan was washed out on September 29, 2026, and the outcome was determined by seedings rather than play on the field.

Sri Lanka’s quarterfinal against Nepal on September 30, 2026, was abandoned without a single ball being bowled, again because of rain. Seedings decided that result as well, sending Sri Lanka through to face India in the semifinal. The rain-affected route to the last four means neither side has had the opportunity to build match rhythm through knockout cricket at this tournament.

With both teams arriving at the semifinal via weather-affected walkovers, the October 1 fixture represents the first competitive knockout action for each side at the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket competition. The absence of prior knockout match practice adds an element of uncertainty to both line-ups, making the toss and early powerplay overs particularly significant in what is a straight elimination contest.

What does Bumrah’s return mean for India’s bowling attack?

Jasprit Bumrah’s inclusion in the playing XI adds considerable experience to India’s bowling group for the knockout stage. His presence alongside Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi gives India a varied attack that combines pace and spin, offering Iyer multiple options against Sri Lanka’s batting line-up.

Axar Patel provides left-arm spin and Washington Sundar off-spin, while Ravi Bishnoi’s leg-spin adds a further dimension to the attack. Bumrah’s ability to bowl at the death and take wickets in the powerplay makes him a key figure in a straight knockout format where margins are small and a single over can decide the outcome.
