MI Emirates have appointed Mark Boucher as their head coach for the ILT20 2026-27 season. The announcement was made on September 30, 2026, one day before the player auction for the upcoming season of the marquee tournament, scheduled for October 1.
Boucher replaces Robin Singh, who had led MI Emirates to the ILT20 title in 2024. The franchise finished as runners-up in the 2025 edition, falling to Desert Vipers in the final. With a new campaign approaching, MI Emirates have opted for a change in their coaching leadership.
The ILT20 2026-27 tournament is scheduled to run from November 22 to December 20, 2026, giving Boucher a matter of weeks to prepare his squad after the auction concludes.
What experience does Boucher bring to MI Emirates?
Mark Boucher arrives at MI Emirates with a well-established coaching record across international and franchise cricket. He served as head coach of the South Africa national team from December 2019 to November 2022, managing the side across Test, ODI and T20I cricket during that three-year tenure.
Following his international stint, Boucher transitioned into franchise cricket within the Mumbai Indians network. He was appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2023 season and continued in that role through IPL 2024. He then moved to the United States, where he coached MI New York to the Major League Cricket championship in 2025.
His appointment at MI Emirates means Boucher has now held head coach positions at three separate MI-affiliated franchises. That familiarity with the organisation’s structures, personnel and philosophy is expected to be an advantage as he steps into the auction room on October 1, 2026, to help shape the squad for the new season.
Why have MI Emirates changed their head coach?
MI Emirates have not disclosed any official reason for Robin Singh’s departure from the head coach role. Singh had overseen the franchise’s most successful campaign to date, guiding them to the ILT20 title in 2024, which makes the change a notable one in the context of recent results.
The franchise finished as runners-up in 2025, losing to Desert Vipers in the final, and the decision to bring in Boucher ahead of the 2026-27 cycle points to a deliberate reset in the coaching setup. The timing of the announcement, confirmed the day before the player auction, indicates that MI Emirates wanted Boucher involved in squad-building decisions from the very start of the new campaign rather than after the auction had concluded.
