Virat Kohli has climbed one place to second in the ICC men’s ODI batting rankings, narrowing the gap on India captain Shubman Gill, who continues to hold the top position. The move followed Kohli’s record 55th century in the format, an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls that contained nine sixes, as India defeated West Indies by eight wickets in the opening match of their ongoing series.

Kohli’s rating now sits at 796, trailing Gill’s 816 by just 20 points. Gill’s own tally was boosted in the same fixture, where he brought up his tenth ODI hundred. Daryl Mitchell occupies third place on 794, with Rohit Sharma fourth on 719.

September 27 produced a record six centuries in men’s ODIs across the globe in a single day. Beyond Kohli and Gill, Temba Bavuma, David Miller, Justin Greaves and Tom Banton all reached three figures in matches played around the world on that date.

How did the wider batting rankings shift?

Kusal Mendis was among the most notable climbers in the batting table. His 121 off 100 balls for Sri Lanka, scored in the match that levelled their three-ODI series against England, helped him advance three places to a career-best seventh. England ultimately claimed that series 2-1.

Joe Root is the only England batter inside the top ten, sitting ninth. Captain Harry Brook moved up one position to 11th after contributing 77 in the final ODI, a match England won by 223 runs.

Bavuma advanced ten positions to 32nd overall after just ten ODI appearances, while Miller settled at 41st. Banton produced the sharpest single-update climb of anyone in the table, surging 333 places, yet his limited international experience means he remains outside the top 80 at 83rd.

Which bowlers gained ground in the latest update?

Keshav Maharaj moved up three spots to reach third in the ODI bowling rankings. The South Africa spinner collected figures of 2 for 54 and 4 for 20 across his side’s series against Australia, and those returns were enough to push him into the top three.

Kuldeep Yadav returned to ODI cricket with a match-winning 4 for 40 against West Indies, a haul that lifted him four places to fifth in the bowling table. It was a significant comeback performance for the left-arm wrist spinner.

Josh Hazlewood has re-entered the top ten after claiming four wickets across the first two ODIs of Australia’s series. The pace bowler moved up five places to tenth, consolidating his position among the leading ODI bowlers in the current rankings cycle.
