India will face Sri Lanka in the men’s cricket semifinal at the Asian Games 2026 on October 1, 2026, at the Aichi Prefectural Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. Both sides advanced to the last four without playing a ball in their respective quarterfinals, as persistent rain across the tournament venue forced multiple matches to be abandoned.

Sri Lanka’s quarterfinal against Nepal on September 29, 2026 was called off before the toss. Rain had begun several hours before the scheduled 9 am local start and showed no signs of easing, leaving officials with no option but to abandon the contest. Sri Lanka advanced to the semifinal by virtue of their higher seeding, determined by ICC T20I rankings.

India had already secured their semifinal berth a day earlier. Their quarterfinal against Afghanistan on September 28, 2026 was washed out, and India advanced on the same seeding-based rule. Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh entered the tournament as the four seeded teams.

How did all four semifinalists qualify?

All four semifinalists advanced without completing a quarterfinal. Pakistan’s match against Hong Kong was washed out, and Pakistan progressed by virtue of their higher seeding. Bangladesh’s quarterfinal against Malaysia on September 29, 2026, was also abandoned due to rain, with Bangladesh moving through on seeding as well.

The pattern of rain-affected quarterfinals meant that every seeded team advanced to the last four, and none of the lower-ranked sides were able to force an upset. The seeding rule, based on ICC T20I rankings, served as the tiebreaker in each case, ensuring that the four highest-ranked sides in the draw all reached the semifinals without facing a competitive elimination.

The men’s cricket tournament at Asian Games 2026 runs from September 24 to October 3 and features 10 teams in total. The two semifinals are both scheduled for October 1, with Bangladesh facing Pakistan in the first match of the day, followed by India taking on Sri Lanka later in the day at the same venue in Nisshin.

What are the arrangements for the final and bronze medal match?

The bronze medal match and the gold medal final are both scheduled for October 3, 2026. The winners of the two semifinals on October 1 will contest the final, while the two losing sides will meet in the bronze medal match on the same day.

India are the defending champions in men’s cricket at the Asian Games, having won the gold medal at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou. That final against Afghanistan was also washed out, and India took the title by virtue of their higher ranking. Sri Lanka, by contrast, did not reach the final in Hangzhou, having been eliminated at the quarterfinal stage by Afghanistan in 2023.
