Sri Lanka‘s men’s cricket team are through to the semifinal of the Asian Games 2026 without a single ball being delivered, after relentless rainfall forced the abandonment of their quarterfinal fixture against Nepal at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Officials called the match off at 08:20 local time, with the ground rendered unplayable by the incessant downpour. Because no result was possible, the tie was settled using ICC T20I rankings. Sri Lanka, placed ninth in the world, held a clear advantage over Nepal, who are ranked 14th, and advanced to the last four on that basis. Nepal were eliminated from the tournament without setting foot on the field.

The Sri Lanka versus Nepal abandonment was the third quarterfinal in a row at the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket event to be called off without a ball bowled. On September 28, 2026, both the Pakistan versus Hong Kong and India versus Afghanistan quarterfinals were washed out, with Pakistan and India progressing by the same ICC ranking method, making the weather the defining factor across the entire knockout round.

How did Nepal reach the quarterfinal?

Nepal’s path to the knockout stage was built on a notable group-stage performance. They defeated Afghanistan during the group phase, a result that underlined their growing stature in Asian cricket and announced them as genuine contenders capable of upsetting higher-ranked opposition. Their place in the quarterfinal was then confirmed when their final Group A fixture against Japan was also abandoned due to rain, securing enough points to advance.

Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh entered the tournament as the four seeded sides and received direct entry into the quarterfinal stage, bypassing the group phase entirely. Nepal, as a non-seeded qualifier, were drawn against one of those seeded teams and ultimately paid the price for the weather-driven format, losing their chance to compete without ever facing a delivery. The cruel irony for Nepal is that their most impressive result of the tournament, the win over Afghanistan, counted for nothing when the knockout stage arrived and the rain refused to relent.

What happens next for Sri Lanka at Asian Games 2026?

Sri Lanka will face defending champions India in the men’s cricket semifinal on Thursday, October 1, 2026. India had themselves advanced without playing, after their quarterfinal against Afghanistan was abandoned on September 28, 2026, with India progressing on the strength of their superior ICC T20I ranking. The semifinal therefore pits two sides that have yet to bowl a single delivery in the knockout rounds against each other, with the weather having denied both teams any competitive preparation at this stage of the tournament.

The men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games 2026 is set to conclude with the gold medal and bronze medal matches on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Sri Lanka will need to overcome India if they are to reach that final and compete for the top honour in what has so far been a tournament heavily disrupted by the weather in Nisshin. Should conditions improve by Thursday, the semifinal will represent the first meaningful cricket played in the knockout phase of the entire men’s competition.
