Former Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf has identified the 2007 ODI World Cup as a decisive moment that shaped contrasting paths for Indian and Pakistani cricket. Both nations were eliminated in the group stage during that tournament in the Caribbean, but the decisions their boards made in the aftermath proved fundamentally different.

Yousuf, who served as a national team selector and batting coach for Pakistan, attributed India’s sustained excellence to strategic choices made by the Indian cricket board following that tournament. He specifically highlighted the appointment of MS Dhoni as a transformative decision that set India on an upward trajectory.

“It was a decisive moment for both cricket boards, and I just feel that after that, the Indian board made the right calls, like appointing MS Dhoni, etc., while in contrast, in Pakistan, the wrong calls were made, because of which Pakistan cricket is struggling now,” Yousuf was quoted as saying by NDTV.

India’s structural advantage through junior development

India’s success extended beyond individual appointments to systematic development of junior talent. Yousuf credited Rahul Dravid’s work in managing India’s junior cricket system as a crucial factor in building a sustainable pipeline of players for the senior team.

“India’s success also comes down to the way Rahul Dravid managed their junior cricket, and over the years, the work he put in identifying and grooming players has paid off for them now,” Yousuf said.

Yousuf acknowledged Virat Kohli’s dominance in white-ball cricket while expressing concern about Pakistan’s inability to produce players of similar calibre since 2019. He contrasted the current generation with the quality of batsmen Pakistan had produced in previous decades.

“I think Virat (Kohli) is the best white-ball player of this era. Unfortunately, after 2019, we have not produced the sort of players you need to maintain dominance at the top level, the sort of players we had in the 80s or 90s,” Yousuf said.

Beyond structural issues, Yousuf identified a cultural problem within Pakistan’s cricket environment. Senior players have shown reluctance to embrace coaching input and commit to continuous improvement, a challenge he encountered directly during his tenure as batting coach.

“The unfortunate part is that I feel some of these current players don’t want to also put in the extra hours and hard work. I have been a batting coach with the Pakistan team, and I can tell you at times felt these players didn’t want to learn,” Yousuf said.

Yousuf reflected positively on Sarfaraz Ahmed’s captaincy, noting that Pakistan performed better during that period. He praised Sarfaraz’s commitment to team success over personal advancement, citing the captain’s willingness to bat lower in the order when required.

Pakistan’s player development and coaching challenges

“I felt that Sarfaraz sacrificed a lot for his team because he wanted to see the team do well. I remember telling him, ‘Why don’t you bat higher?’ and he said, ‘For him, the team result mattered the most, not his position’,” Yousuf said.

During his time as batting coach, Yousuf worked directly with Babar Azam in New Zealand to address technical and tactical issues. However, that engagement proved unproductive when Babar declined to implement the suggested changes.

“I spent time with Babar in New Zealand when I was batting coach trying to make him understand where he was going wrong, but he was unwilling to make any changes,” Yousuf said.

When asked about the pressure Indian players face on social media, Yousuf dismissed it as an excuse for underperformance. He argued that professional cricketers must dedicate themselves to their craft regardless of external pressures.

“Tell me, isn’t the social media pressure more on Indian players, so how do they manage?” Yousuf said.

Yousuf concluded by addressing the tendency to blame coaches for Pakistan’s struggles. He argued that coaching effectiveness depends fundamentally on player willingness to implement guidance and work ethically.

“We tend to blame the coaches for everything, but what can a coach do when the players don’t do what they are supposed to do?” Yousuf said.
