Joe Root has recently surpassed Sachin Tendulkar as the second fastest batter to reach 23,000 international runs across all formats. Root currently holds 14,278 Test runs, placing him 1,643 runs behind Tendulkar’s all-time Test record of 15,921 runs. Root is the eighth batter in international cricket to cross the 23,000-run milestone and the first from England to achieve this feat. Virat Kohli remains the fastest to reach 23,000 runs, with Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid also having crossed the mark.

Root recently took charge of England’s Test team following Ben Stokes’ retirement. As the new Test captain, Root has reflected on his earliest memories of watching Test cricket at Headingley, a ground that holds particular significance in his career. Root is the third-most capped Test player, behind Sachin Tendulkar with 200 caps and James Anderson with 188 caps. His childhood experience at the venue shaped his understanding of international cricket and the demands of Test match cricket at the highest level.

“India won the toss and batted first, and I watched one wicket all day. It was Rahul Dravid (148) and Sourav Ganguly (128) who got a boatload of runs, and that’s one where Sachin got, I don’t know how much,” Root said as quoted by NDTV Sports.

Root’s childhood memory at Headingley

Root attended that Headingley match as a young cricketer with his local club, gaining early exposure to world-class batting performances. The dominant Indian batting display left a lasting impression on the future England captain, demonstrating the skill and resilience required to succeed at Test level. His recollection of that day highlights how India’s batters controlled the match from start to finish.

“It was a tough toil for the England bowlers, but that was my first experience of coming here with a local cricket club. It was with Rotherham Town, actually. And they took the Under 11s out to watch the game, and it was a great experience,” Root said.

Root’s early exposure to Test cricket at Headingley, watching world-class batters like Dravid, Ganguly and Tendulkar in action, shaped his understanding of the format and the challenges faced by bowlers in international cricket. The memory of that dominant Indian performance remained with him throughout his own cricket career. Now as England’s Test captain, Root continues to play at the same venue where he first witnessed international cricket as a young spectator, bringing with him the lessons learned from watching such accomplished batsmen operate at the highest level.
