Brief Scores: Afghanistan 129 for 6 (Akram 34, Sugaya-Slater 2-18) beat Japan 81 (Sakurano-Thomas 23, Gul 4-8, Kharote 3-19, Ahmadzai 2-13) by 48 runs

Afghanistan opened their Asian Games men’s cricket campaign with a 48-run victory over Japan in Group A, earning two points through a disciplined bowling display that dismantled the hosts after a steady start to their chase.

Batting first, Afghanistan reached 129 for 6. Mohammad Akram was the top scorer with 34, while captain Darwish Rasooli contributed 29 and Karim Janat chipped in with 21. Japan‘s bowlers kept Afghanistan’s scoring rate in check through the first fifteen overs, but Mohammad Ishaq’s unbeaten knock of 25 from 17 deliveries at number six injected late momentum and pushed the total to a competitive mark. Right-arm seamer Shoma Sugaya-Slater claimed 2 for 18, and offspinner Ibrahim Takahashi also finished with two wickets.

Japan’s reply began promisingly. They advanced to 53 for 2 inside the first eight overs and appeared capable of mounting a genuine challenge. However, right-arm-wrist spinner Arab Gul, appearing in his first T20 international, broke the partnership and triggered a dramatic collapse. Gul struck twice in the twelfth over and twice again in the fourteenth, reducing Japan from 60 for 4 to 63 for 8 in the space of a few deliveries. Left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote and Abdollah Ahmadzai then accounted for the remaining wickets, with Japan dismissed for 81 in 19.3 overs. Kota Sakurano-Thomas was Japan’s highest scorer with 23.

How did Afghanistan’s bowlers dismantle Japan’s middle order?

Arab Gul was the standout performer with figures of 4 for 8, a remarkable return on debut at this level. His back-to-back two-wicket overs in the middle phase of Japan’s innings were decisive, turning a competitive chase into a rout before the lower order could offer any resistance.

Kharote complemented Gul’s effort with 3 for 19, ensuring Japan’s tail offered little. Ahmadzai contributed 2 for 13 to wrap up the innings. The combined spin attack conceded fewer than five runs per over across the innings and restricted Japan to a total 48 runs short of Afghanistan’s score.

What do the Group A standings look like after this result?

Afghanistan sit at the top of Group A with two points from their opening fixture. Japan arrived at this match having pushed India close in a rain-affected contest at Sano just two days earlier, but they could not replicate that intensity against Afghanistan’s bowling.

Both sides still have a fixture against Nepal remaining in the group stage. Only the top two teams from Group A will advance to the quarter-finals, meaning every remaining match carries significant weight for all three sides.
