Mark Wood retires from international cricket due to knee injury

England fast bowler Mark Wood announced his retirement from international cricket on September 22, 2026, citing a recurring knee injury that left him unable to continue at the highest level. Wood is 36 years old and his England contract was due to expire in September 2026.

Wood featured in 38 Test matches across his career, claiming 119 wickets. He also made 70 one-day international appearances, taking 80 ODI wickets, and played 38 T20 internationals, claiming 54 wickets in that format. He made his international debut in 2015 in limited-overs cricket.

His final international appearance came on November 21, 2025, in the first Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series in Perth, which England lost by eight wickets. Wood bowled 11 overs in that match before suffering a recurrence of his knee injury, which ruled him out for the remainder of the Ashes series. He had undergone surgery on his left knee in March 2025 before returning for that Perth Test. Wood acknowledged that he believed he had rushed back too quickly from surgery.

“Probably, from my point of view [came back too early and rushed return]. I don’t think it’s to blame anybody else, it was just, I was desperate to play Perth because it was the fastest wicket there. I hadn’t had much time back on my legs. The warm-up game, my hamstring got incredibly tight because it was looking after my knee, and I think that whole time, when you talk about injury, people don’t see the work you’re putting in behind you,” Wood told Sky Sports.

Why did Wood decide this was the right time to retire?

Wood had previously shown resilience through multiple serious injuries across his career, including ankle problems, elbow surgery and side strains. However, the recurrence of his knee injury following the Perth Test proved to be the point at which he felt he could no longer continue. Wood also spoke about the difference between this injury and previous setbacks, and mentioend that his Central Contract status with England, set to finish in September, also played a role in the timing of his decision.

“I was always chasing that dream of, can I physically do this? My ankle problems, my elbow problems, all the rest of them, every time I went back, it felt better. This time, something wasn’t quite right. Plus the contract situation. My contract ends in September, and I think it just feels like the right time,” Wood added.

What did Wood achieve during his international career?

Across all three formats, Wood was a consistent wicket-taker for England from his debut in 2015 through to November 2025. His last ODI was on February 26, 2025, against Afghanistan, and his last T20 international was on February 2, 2025, against India.

Wood was part of England’s 50-over World Cup-winning squad in 2019. He also played a significant role in England’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2022, taking nine wickets in four games. However, injury denied him the chance to play in the semi-finals and final of that tournament.

His career was marked by a lengthy injury timeline that included ankle surgery in 2016, a side strain in 2019, right elbow surgery in 2022, a right thigh muscle injury in 2024, a right elbow stress injury later in 2024, and left knee ligament surgery in March 2025 before the final recurrence in Perth.
