India defeated Japan by two runs in a historic one-off T20I at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Sano, Kanto, on September 22. The match was heavily affected by rain, forcing officials to reduce the contest to five overs per side.
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bat first, but the decision backfired as the Men in Blue managed just 32 runs for the loss of four wickets in their five overs. Iyer top-scored with 16 runs, while Japan’s Charlie Hara-Hinze claimed two wickets to put India under pressure.
The hosts came close during the chase and took the game down to a nail-biting finish, but India held their nerve to secure a two-run victory. Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming top-scored for Japan with 12 runs, while Washington Sundar returned figures of 2/13. Axar Patel then bowled a tight final over to help India seal the victory.
