Victorian all-rounder Matt Short produced one of the standout moments of the 2026-27 Australian One-Day Cup season opener when he pouched a one-handed return catch to end the innings of Queensland captain Marnus Labuschagne at Allan Border Field on September 19, 2026. The dismissal arrived off the very first ball Short bowled in the match, making it an instant and dramatic entry into the contest.

Labuschagne, who had reached 42 at the crease, stepped out to meet a full-toss and drove it hard and straight back down the ground. Short reacted sharply, extending his right hand and completing the catch cleanly. The Queensland captain had no answer to the reflexes on display, and he walked off having faced 67 balls.

Queensland, batting first, absorbed the blow and continued to build their innings. The home side eventually closed their 50 overs on 7-335, setting Victoria a substantial target to chase at the venue closely associated with Queensland cricket.

How did Short’s catch unfold on the field?

Short had only just entered the attack when the dismissal occurred. His opening delivery was a full-toss, and Labuschagne, who was well set, chose to come down the pitch and meet it on the full. The drive was firm and directed straight back towards the bowler, but Short’s hand-eye coordination allowed him to react in an instant and complete the one-handed take.

The timing of the catch added to its significance. It gave Victoria an early and important breakthrough against a captain who had been building a platform for Queensland in the season-opening fixture of the 2026-27 One-Day Cup.

What did Labuschagne’s dismissal mean for the match?

Despite the departure of their captain, Queensland showed considerable batting depth and continued to score freely. The home side’s total of 7-335 from 50 overs was a competitive score that placed the burden firmly on Victoria’s batting lineup in the chase.

Short’s intervention with the ball was a bright moment for Victoria, but Queensland’s recovery underlined the strength of their batting order. The match served as the first fixture of the 2026-27 Australian One-Day Cup season, and the contest at Allan Border Field provided an early indication of the competitive cricket that the domestic one-day competition was likely to produce throughout the season.
