Rohit Sharma has opened up about the nervousness he experienced before Test matches, revealing that the pressure of playing his favourite format often left him unable to sleep. The former India captain also recalled how his mother’s homemade banana wafers became his go-to comfort food during those sleepless nights.

Sharma made the revelation on the latest episode of Family Full House, which premiered on September 19 on Sony Entertainment Television and Sony LIV, where he spoke about his cricket career and personal life.

“Haan, hoti toh hai. Main jhooth nahi bolunga, lekin jab bhi main Test match khelta tha, andar bahut nervousness hoti thi. Toh Test match ke time khaas karke, kyunki yeh mera favourite format tha, Test match khelna,” Sharma said on the show.

The nervousness that came with Test cricket

Sharma elaborated on why Test cricket created such anxiety for him, highlighting the distinct challenges that set it apart from other formats. He described how the pressure of playing the format meant he could not sleep properly in the nights leading up to matches.

“Kyunki Test match khelna aasaan format nahi hai. Koi bhi format aasaan nahi hota, lekin Test match ke apne alag-alag challenges hote the. Toh Test match ke liye main hamesha nervous rehta tha aur nervousness mein mujhe neend nahi aati thi, toh raat bhar main jaaga rehta tha,” he further added.

To cope with the long nights spent awake, Sharma developed a strategy to manage his restlessness. He would keep a specific comfort food with him during matches to help pass the time and ease his anxiety during those sleepless hours.

“Toh aap jaage rehte ho toh kuch na kuch khaane ka mann karta tha. Toh main hamesha mere saath mera comfort food rakhta tha, jo meri mummy hamesha bana ke deti thi, woh tha banana wafers,” Sharma added.

The comfort food was a homemade creation prepared by his mother, Purnima Sharma, using a special method. Rather than being fried, the banana wafers were baked according to his mother’s unique recipe, making them a healthier option for the cricketer to consume during his restless nights.

“Woh fried nahi hota tha. Meri mummy ke kuch tareeke the, woh bake karti thi usko aur woh main hamesha apne saath leke chalta tha. Toh kabhi bhi mann karta tha toh usse kha leta tha,” he concluded.

Sharma’s revelation provides insight into the mental and emotional toll that Test cricket took on him throughout his career. His reliance on his mother’s homemade banana wafers underscores the importance of personal comfort and family support in managing the pressures of international cricket at the highest level.
