BCCI office bearers authorised to decide on selection committee amid Agarkar uncertainty

The BCCI’s Annual General Meeting held on September 18 concluded without resolving the question of Ajit Agarkar’s continuation as chairman of selectors. The board’s office bearers have, however, been given the authority to determine the composition of the senior men’s selection committee, with a decision expected in the coming days.

Agarkar took charge as chairman of selectors in July 2023 and is understood to be contracted through October 2026. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his position, a selection meeting convened earlier this week to name India squads for the West Indies ODIs, the Irani Cup and the India A sides proceeded without any apparent disruption. Those with knowledge of the situation characterised it as routine, with the selectors continuing their duties as normal.

Cricbuzz reported that speculation around Agarkar’s role has intensified over recent weeks. A key flashpoint was his non-attendance at a review meeting convened this month to evaluate India’s performances during the tour of the United Kingdom, an absence the BCCI publicly downplayed. Further questions arose from an episode ahead of the Lord’s ODI, when the selectors reportedly communicated to former captain Rohit Sharma that he was no longer part of the team’s plans, only for the board to step in and intervene in the matter.

What happens if Agarkar’s tenure comes to an end?

If a change at the top of the selection panel does materialise, the BCCI cannot move quickly to fill the vacancy. The board is bound by a formal procedure that requires the position to be advertised publicly before candidates are interviewed, making any transition a drawn-out process rather than an immediate one.

Cricbuzz has learnt that former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel is being considered as a possible candidate for the top selector’s role, should a change eventually be confirmed. No formal process for reconstituting the senior selection committee has been set in motion as yet.

The junior selection committee appointment is also pending. The BCCI advertised five vacancies on August 24, but interviews have not yet been scheduled. Many within the board had anticipated that the new junior committee would be named in the wake of the AGM. The latest indications, however, suggest the process will run through to late September 2026.

What else did the AGM address?

The AGM also took up the BCCI’s position on the National Sports Governance Act. The Supreme Court has asked the board to formally clarify where it stands on the legislation. The BCCI has consistently argued, including through its submissions in the Odisha Cricket Association case, that cricket does not qualify as a designated sport within the meaning of the Act.

Discussions over the shifting of the Ranchi venue for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia were also prominent across media outlets. These reports were debunked by the Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary Saurabh Tiwary. Ranchi is set to host the fourth Test of the marquee series between India and Australia from February 19 to 23, 2027. Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, and Ahmedabad will host the other four matches of the series.

“There is no change in the venue. If anybody has to write to the BCCI about it, it should be me and I have not written it,” Tiwary told Cricbuzz.
