India’s cricket governing body convened its 95th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Friday, September 18, with the appointment of a new men’s chief selector among the key items listed on the agenda. The meeting arrives at a significant moment, as Ajit Agarkar‘s tenure as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee is set to conclude in September 2026.
Agarkar took charge of the selection panel on July 4, 2023, and has since overseen squad decisions across all three formats of the game. As recently as September 16, 2026, he presided over a selection meeting at which squads for the upcoming home white-ball series against the West Indies were announced, in what may prove to be one of his final official acts in the role.
Whether Agarkar will be handed an extension or whether a new appointment will be made remains an open question. No formal decision had been communicated as of September 18, 2026, and the AGM is expected to provide clarity on the matter.
Who are the candidates to succeed Agarkar?
Two names have come to the fore as potential replacements for Agarkar at the head of the selection committee. Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha are both understood to be in contention for the chief selector’s position, according to reports published ahead of the AGM.
Both are experienced former India internationals who have represented the country across formats. Their names have been widely discussed in cricketing circles in the days leading up to the meeting. The BCCI is expected to follow its established evaluation process before confirming any appointment, and it remains to be seen whether a decision is finalised during the AGM itself or at a later stage.
What else is on the AGM agenda?
Alongside the selection committee matter, the AGM is also scheduled to take up the question of nominating India’s representative to the International Cricket Council, a routine but consequential item given the country’s prominent role in global cricket administration.
The timing of the meeting carries added significance from a scheduling standpoint. India are set to host West Indies for a white-ball series in the near term, followed by a full tour from New Zealand in October and November 2026 that comprises five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests. Whoever leads the selection panel going forward will be central to squad planning for that New Zealand assignment and beyond.
