Manav Suthar delivered a match-winning spell of 5/75 to help Warwickshire dismiss Essex for 189 in their second innings and seal an eight-wicket victory in Division One of the County Championship. The India left-arm spinner bowled 24 overs in that second innings, having gone wicketless when Essex batted first. The target of 133 was chased down in just 25.3 overs, with Zen Malik giving the innings early momentum before Dan Mousley and Sam Hain completed the formality.

Suthar’s wickets came at crucial moments throughout Essex’s second-innings collapse. Paul Walter had looked threatening before falling for 42, and Dean Elgar’s final appearance at Chelmsford ended when he picked out short leg off Suthar’s bowling. The 24-year-old then removed Matt Critchley and George Bell before accounting for two of Essex’s last three batters as the innings folded rapidly. Chris Woakes complemented the spinner’s effort with figures of 3/33 at the other end. The result was Warwickshire’s fourth win from five Championship matches this season, moving them into contention at the top of Division One.

How does Suthar’s five-for fit into his 2026 season?

The five-wicket haul took Suthar’s tally to 26 wickets across five County Championship appearances this season, a return that includes two five-wicket hauls. That consistency with the red ball has made him one of the standout spinners in the competition during the current campaign.

His County stint follows a breakthrough period in Test cricket for India. Suthar made his Test debut against Afghanistan in June, claiming 6/33 in his first innings at that level. He then produced a 10-wicket match performance against Sri Lanka in Galle, where figures of 4/76 and 6/55 made him the youngest Indian spinner to take 10 wickets in an away Test. The County Championship has provided him with further high-quality red-ball preparation after those international milestones.

How did other Indian players perform in the County Championship?

Results were mixed for the other Indian cricketers in action across the rounds. R Sai Kishore contributed a determined 71 off 131 balls for Gloucestershire against Middlesex in Division Two, an innings that helped his side keep the first-innings deficit down to 30 runs.

Jaydev Unadkat returned impressive figures of 4/83 for Sussex, while Mukesh Kumar went wicketless in Nottinghamshire’s first innings against the same county. Kuldeep Yadav’s outing for Yorkshire against Somerset yielded 0/31 from seven overs, and he contributed 11 runs with the bat. For Surrey, Auqib Nabi was unable to make an impact with the ball as Glamorgan reached 339/5 at the close of the second day.

Warwickshire’s victory leaves their title prospects dependent on how fellow contenders Somerset and Nottinghamshire fare in the remaining fixtures, with the Division One standings yet to be finalised ahead of the final round.
