England defeated Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Rose Bowl on September 15, 2026, posting 254 for 4 after being put in to bat and then bowling the visitors out for 135.

Sonny Baker was the pick of the England bowlers, returning figures of 3 for 12 in four overs. He struck twice in the powerplay and added a third wicket late in the innings to leave Sri Lanka in serious trouble throughout their chase. All six England bowlers used in the match took at least one wicket, and Sri Lanka lost their first seven wickets for just 76 runs before being dismissed for 135.

Skipper Harry Brook anchored the England batting effort with 114 not out from 49 balls, his second T20I century and the fastest by an Englishman in 2026. Jos Buttler contributed 80 from 44 deliveries as the pair helped England reach a commanding total. England now lead the three-match T20I series 1-0.

What did Brook say about England’s squad depth?

Brook‘s century was central to England’s large total, but after the match the England captain spoke about the broader strength of the squad rather than his own innings. Baker had come into the squad for the rested Jofra Archer, and put on an exceptional showing. The result underlined how much confidence England have in every member of their current group across both white-ball formats.

“Yes, absolutely. When I took over captaincy, I always wanted to be able to pick a squad where if someone went down half an hour before the game, I’d have full faith in the person coming in, in any spot, in any position. And I feel like we’re at that with this squad now, in both one days and T20s. We’re really trending in the right direction with this team. It’s just good to be able to play with lads that are so collective as well. We spend a lot of time together off the field and that resonates onto the field as well,” Brook said on a video posted by England Cricket on X (formerly Twitter).

How did Baker’s bowling shape the Sri Lanka innings?

Baker’s three-wicket haul proved decisive in restricting Sri Lanka well below what was already a very large target. His two powerplay wickets put Sri Lanka under immediate pressure at the top of the order, and his third dismissal later in the innings helped prevent any lower-order recovery.

The collective effort from England’s attack was equally notable. With all six bowlers contributing wickets, Sri Lanka found no respite at any stage of their innings. Losing seven wickets for 76 runs effectively ended the contest, and the visitors were eventually dismissed for 135, leaving England winners by 119 runs in the series opener.
