Seven former Australia cricket captains have written to the country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, raising humanitarian concerns about the ongoing detention of former Pakistan captain and prime minister Imran Khan.
The signatories to the letter were Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh, who clarified that they were writing ‘not as diplomats or political figures, but as former captains who felt compelled to speak up’.
The letter is explicit that the group holds no view on the legal or political proceedings against Imran Khan, describing those as a matter for Pakistan alone. What drives their appeal, they write, is a principle they regard as ‘a matter of basic humanity, whatever their politics’, namely the standard of care owed to any individual held in custody.
The letter further highlights that Imran Khan’s sons and sisters have spent months publicly voicing alarm about his welfare behind bars, citing inadequate medical attention, severely restricted access to family and limited contact with legal representation. Greg Chappell had separately sought a meeting with Minister Wong to put the group’s concerns directly to her, but that request went without reply, prompting the formal written approach.
What is the background to this appeal?
This letter to Penny Wong is the latest in a sequence of interventions by prominent former cricketers on Imran Khan‘s behalf. The first collective action came in February this year, when 14 former international captains signed a joint letter raising concerns about his situation.
On August 23, twenty-two former international captains from across the globe addressed Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directly, arguing that the conditions of Imran Khan’s detention fell below a standard already mandated by Pakistan’s Supreme Court.
That letter carried three specific demands, first, that the Supreme Court-directed medical board, which was to include Imran Khan’s personal physicians, be allowed to conduct a thorough and independent review of his health, with particular attention to the deterioration of vision in his right eye; second, that court-ordered weekly family visits be carried out consistently and without bureaucratic obstruction; and third, that any treatment recommended following the medical review be administered promptly.
Since the February letter, former Pakistan players Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram and Moin Khan have each spoken publicly on the matter. Current Australia captain Pat Cummins has also added his voice to those calling for attention to Imran Khan’s welfare.

Greg Chappell’s earlier attempt to arrange a direct conversation with Minister Wong on behalf of the group did not receive a response. The formal letter now stands as the group’s next step in seeking acknowledgement and action from the Australian government.
