Kent’s push for promotion from County Championship Division Two has suffered a significant setback after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ruled fast bowler Hasan Mahmud out of the club’s remaining fixtures in the competition.
Mahmud, 26, was a standout performer at Canterbury, claiming 26 wickets across four County Championship matches to help Kent climb to third in Division Two. He also contributed four dismissals in the Vitality Blast, bringing his overall tally for the club to 30 wickets in seven appearances across all formats. Kent director of cricket Simon Cook acknowledged the disappointment while respecting the BCB’s position.
“We’re disappointed to have lost Hasan’s services for the County Championship run-in. But we respect the decision made by the BCB after constructive talks, and wish him well this winter. Everyone at the club thanks Hasan for his services the season, after taking 30 wickets in seven appearances across the Rothesay County Championship and Vitality Blast,” said Cook as quoted by Cricinfo.
Why has the BCB withdrawn Hasan Mahmud from Kent?
The BCB’s decision centres on workload management ahead of a demanding end to the international calendar. Mahmud is an international across all formats, and the board have chosen to protect his fitness ahead of a congested schedule of commitments in the months ahead.
Mahmud’s county stint was already interrupted by Bangladesh’s tour of Australia, where he delivered a match-winning performance in the first Test, taking nine wickets in the match as Bangladesh claimed a historic victory. With that tour complete, the BCB were unwilling to risk further strain on the seamer before a busy winter programme.
Mahmud is part of Bangladesh’s squad for the Asian Games quarter-final on September 28. He will then look to feature in Test matches against Afghanistan and West Indies, before a three-format tour of South Africa rounds off the year. The BCB’s intention is to keep him fit and available across all those assignments.
What does Kent’s promotion picture look like for their final two matches?
Kent currently sit two points behind Northamptonshire, who hold the last available promotion place in Division Two. Durham have already secured their return to the top flight as champions, leaving one spot still to be claimed with the season entering its final stages.
Kent have two home fixtures remaining. They face Lancashire first, with that match beginning on Tuesday, followed by a game against Gloucestershire. Both Lancashire and Gloucestershire are placed at the foot of the Division Two table, giving Kent a favourable draw on paper despite the absence of their leading wicket-taker.
Fellow overseas seamers Keith Dudgeon and Khaled Ahmed remain available for both matches, providing Kent with experienced pace options as they chase promotion. The club will need to make the most of their home advantage and the quality of their remaining opponents if they are to overhaul Northamptonshire and secure a place in Division One.
