Aneurin Donald is set to make his T20I debut for England against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, with white-ball coach Brendon McCullum confirming the selection ahead of the series opener.

Donald comes into the XI in place of Phil Salt, who is sidelined with a minor quadriceps injury. Salt is one of three players unavailable through fitness concerns, with Jacob Bethell ruled out due to a knee problem and Sam Curran absent with a groin issue. Jofra Archer has been rested after featuring in the three-Test series against Pakistan, while Josh Tongue is included despite also playing all three of those matches.

As reported by Cricinfo, McCullum confirmed that the Swansea-born batter, who represents Derbyshire, will open the batting alongside wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

Why has Aneurin Donald earned his England call-up?

Donald’s domestic T20 numbers have been difficult to ignore. Batting for Derbyshire, he has compiled a strike rate of 214, and McCullum’s interest was sharpened further during the Hundred final last month, where Donald top-scored for Trent Rockets with 38 runs from just 19 deliveries.

His career path has taken him through several counties. Donald departed Glamorgan at the age of 21, subsequently moved to Hampshire, and then signed for Derbyshire in 2023. His selection carries particular significance for the East Midlands county. Derbyshire have not had an academy product named in an England squad since James Harris was chosen for a T20I series against New Zealand in 2013. Going further back, the last Derbyshire homegrown player to actually win an England cap was Simon Jones in 2005, which underlines just how rare a moment this is for the club.

What is the broader context for this England T20I series?

Tuesday’s match is England’s first T20I fixture since Harry Brook’s side defeated India 4-0 in July. That series result moved England to the top of the ICC T20I rankings, a position India had held since February 2022.

Brook continues as captain as England look to maintain their standing at home. The series against Sri Lanka also gives McCullum a chance to evaluate fresh options at the top of the batting order, with Donald’s debut representing the most significant selection call ahead of the opening match.
