Abhishek Sharma produced a match-winning performance on September 13, 2026, at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, scoring 82 runs off just 32 balls. His innings featured seven boundaries and seven sixes as India chased down Afghanistan’s total of 157 with seven wickets in hand, completing the chase in 13.4 overs with 38 balls remaining.

Murali Kartik analysed Sharma’s explosive knock and the shift in his approach during the match. Kartik noted that Sharma sometimes places excessive pressure on himself through his aggressive batting style and that observers often wish to see him exercise more patience between attacking strokes.

“The kind of shots that he plays, the kind of risks that he takes – sometimes you expect too much from him, and sometimes he also expects a bit too much from himself. That’s why there are times when you want him to take that extra moment. He is unstoppable,” Kartik said during a discussion on Sony Sports.

“Even if he defends two, he can hit a six off the third. So he is still going at 200. That’s the kind of strike rate he bats at anyway,” he added.

Kartik on Sharma’s aggressive approach and self-imposed pressure

Sharma had entered the match carrying a difficult run of form, having recorded four consecutive single-digit scores in T20 Internationals with an average of 6.66 across his last six T20I appearances. His half-century came in just 22 balls, demonstrating the explosive nature of his batting on the day.

Kartik’s analysis highlighted the tension between Sharma’s natural attacking instincts and the need for tactical restraint in T20 cricket. The commentator observed that even when Sharma chooses to defend deliveries, his overall strike rate remains exceptionally high, allowing him to maintain aggressive intent while occasionally showing selectivity.

Yuvraj Singh’s likely influence on Sharma’s batting strategy

Kartik pointed to Yuvraj Singh’s influence as a key factor in Sharma’s tactical adjustment during the innings. Yuvraj, whom Sharma looks up to as a mentor, likely counselled him on balancing aggression with selectivity in T20 cricket.

“Somebody he looks up to is Yuvraj Singh, and I am pretty sure, knowing Yuvraj Singh, he would have been in his ear saying that you can still have your moments in T20 cricket. You don’t have to go at the rate of knots every ball. That was very evident in the way he batted today (Sunday),” Kartik said.
