Yuzvendra Chahal delivered another outstanding performance in County Championship Division Two, claiming 4 for 46 in Worcestershire’s second innings as Northamptonshire beat the hosts by six wickets at New Road. The victory was wrapped up inside three days, with Northamptonshire chasing down a target of 94 with six wickets in hand.

The win keeps Northamptonshire ahead of Kent with two rounds of action remaining in Division Two, strengthening their promotion push. Chahal, who has never represented India in Test cricket, continues to make a strong case for his red-ball credentials through his county outings.

Worcestershire were bowled out for 182 in their second innings, with Brett D’Oliveira top-scoring on 64. Chahal’s four wickets were the decisive contribution with the ball, restricting the home side to a total that Northamptonshire comfortably overhauled. In Northamptonshire’s second innings chase, Pakistan spinner Usama Mir took three wickets but could not prevent the visitors from reaching their target with six wickets remaining.

How did Chahal perform across his recent county matches?

Chahal’s display against Worcestershire was not an isolated effort. The leg-spinner has taken 14 wickets across his past two County Championship matches for Northamptonshire in 2026, underlining the consistency he has brought to the side since joining for the second half of the season. That run of form has made him one of the most influential overseas players in Division Two this campaign.

This is Chahal’s third stint with Northamptonshire. Across his previous tenures with the club, he had already accumulated 44 first-class wickets and seven wickets in List A cricket before the 2026 season began. His return this year has added significantly to that tally, and his performances have come at a critical stage of the promotion race.

What is Chahal’s broader international and county record?

Chahal has taken 217 wickets for India across ODI and T20 formats during a seven-year international career, establishing himself as one of the country’s most productive white-ball spinners. However, a Test cap has remained elusive throughout that period, making his county appearances all the more significant as a showcase of his red-ball ability.

His performances in the longer format for Northamptonshire have demonstrated that his leg-spin is well suited to English conditions. With two rounds remaining in Division Two, Northamptonshire’s position ahead of Kent means Chahal’s contributions could prove decisive in determining whether the county secures promotion at the end of the season.
