George Madgwick, a Reform councillor, mediated between Pakistan U-19 coaching staff and the protesters. He spoke first with the team’s coach, who Madgwick described as very understanding, before turning to address the crowd directly.

Madgwick’s intervention brought the confrontation to a swift end. After confirming the identity of the touring party with the coaching staff, he walked out to the assembled crowd and corrected the misidentification on the spot.
He told the protesters, ‘You’ve got it wrong guys, it’s a cricket club’. The crowd dispersed within a couple of minutes. Madgwick later described it as a massively unfortunate incident. No further disruption was reported at the hotel following the clarification.
The England and Wales Cricket Board subsequently contacted Pakistan management and confirmed it was reviewing security arrangements for the touring party in the wake of the episode.
