'It's looking good for us in terms of the talent' – Sir Vivian Richards hails CPL's emerging talent

Sir Vivian Richards has expressed optimism about the emerging talent on display in the 2026 Caribbean Premier League season. The West Indies legend highlighted several young players who have caught his attention during the tournament’s opening phase. Richards spoke about the development pathway these cricketers are following and their potential to strengthen West Indies cricket in the coming years.

Richards discussed the performances of young players competing in CPL 2026, which kicked off on August 7 across eight nations. He focused particular attention on Zachary Carter, the aggressive batter who has been representing Barbados Tridents in the tournament. Carter featured in the West Indies squad at the Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup earlier in 2026 in Windlesk, where he scored a century against South Africa.

“The young guy Carter out of Barbados, he’s seriously aggressive, he’s been getting some good starts, but I think he needs to work now on the fact that when he has such good starts, he’s got to see his team through; you cannot be throwing it away in that period of time,” Richards said as quoted by Observer.

“I guess that’s the young individual because that comes with experience as well, and the more he plays, he can get better, but certainly, his ball striking ability is as good as any. The only thing basically that you see around that maybe needs some brushing up as well, sometimes the catching doesn’t quite make the fielding coaches look that good,” he added.

Vitel Lawes, the 19-year-old fast bowler from Jamaica Kingsmen, also drew Richards’ attention. Lawes was fast-tracked into the West Indies ODI team without prior senior cricket experience, marking an unusual pathway into international cricket. In CPL 2026, Lawes has taken eight wickets across nine matches for the Kingsmen, demonstrating his impact with the ball in the tournament. He also praised Jakeem Pollard after the youngster who hampered by injuries.

“From what I’ve been hearing is that individual, he had some injuries. He was also a member of the under-19 West Indies squad at some period of time and what would have kept him out, I think, would have been some serious injuries he would have had, but he’s back and he looks pretty impressive,” Richards said.

“The young guy from Jamaica as well, Lawes, so it’s looking good for us in terms of the talent that you see. I hope we can expand on that.” he added.
