Spain defeated Argentina to end a remarkable campaign and emerge as 2026 FIFA World Cup champions at the New York New Jersey Stadium. La Roja avenged their defeat in their only other meeting at the tournament back in 1966, when they lost in the group stage.
Luis de la Fuente’s side went into the final on the back of an almost flawless tournament, winning six of seven games and conceding just one goal. They were favourites, but the reigning champions did not seem like a team that would surrender their title without a fight.
