IPL 2026: ‘He should open an academy’ - Mark Boucher hails Klaasen’s masterclass after SRH beats CSK comprehensively

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced a clinical all-round display to register a commanding five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 63 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Monday, May 18.

The win confirmed SRH’s place in the playoffs, while CSK’s campaign suffered a massive blow in the business end of the tournament. After restricting Chennai to a below-par total on a sluggish Chepauk surface, SRH chased down the target comfortably courtesy of composed knocks from Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.

Pat Cummins also played a pivotal role with the ball, leading from the front with a sensational spell in conditions that suited his style of bowling perfectly. Former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher lavished praise on Cummins for his calm leadership and exceptional game awareness during the crucial encounter.

“Cummins was spectacular. He assessed the conditions brilliantly and understood early on that the pitch would start slowing down and the ball would grip a little. These were conditions that suited Pat Cummins perfectly. Picking up three crucial wickets, he truly led from the front. What I really admire about him is the way he goes about his business. He’s an incredibly talented cricketer, but he’s also very smart,”  he said on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’.

“There’s never any panic, even if he goes for a boundary. He always knows exactly what he needs to do with the next ball. He doesn’t chase the game or keep changing things unnecessarily. He stays calm, sticks to his plans, and executes them with clarity. He led from the front, and his teammates followed him brilliantly,” he continued.

Klaasen, on the other hand, once again proved why he remains one of the most dangerous middle-order batters in T20 cricket. Walking in at a slightly tricky stage of the chase, the South African batter counterattacked brilliantly and shifted the momentum decisively in SRH’s favour.

Boucher was particularly impressed with Klaasen’s approach against spin and labelled the innings a “masterclass” in handling pressure situations.

“I think he should open an academy and teach the rest of us, because that was a masterclass. On a wicket that was stopping and turning, he came in with a clear plan. He used his footwork brilliantly, which allowed him to access both sides of the wicket. He also looked to play squarer, which was the right option, as seen with the reverse sweeps he executed. What I really admired was the intent he showed. At that stage, the game seemed to be drifting a little, and he immediately injected momentum into the innings. He gave the entire Sunrisers team a lift and forced Ruturaj to rethink his tactics. Once the spinners were taken off and the seamers came on, it also opened up scoring opportunities for Ishan Kishan. It was a masterclass in how to put the pressure back on the bowling side,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the defeat further complicated Chennai Super Kings’ playoff aspirations. The Chennai-based franchise will now have to win their last league game against Gujarat Titans to have any chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
