President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has charged the Black Starlets to make Ghana proud at the upcoming 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be staged in Morocco, urging the team to seize the moment and re-establish the nation’s dominance in youth football.

President Simeon-Okraku whose unfiltered energy for youth football development has seen Ghana’s youth national teams flourish in several tournaments delivered his message when he visited the team at the Kotoka International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday, arriving around 4am to personally see off the contingent before their departure to Morocco.

His presence underscored the importance attached to the tournament and the belief in the squad’s potential.

Addressing the players and technical team, President Simeon-Okraku emphasized the significance of their qualification, describing it as a turning point for Ghana football after years of absence from the competition. He urged the players to approach the tournament with confidence, hunger, and a winning mentality.

“For years, we have not been able to qualify for the AFCON. But you have done it this time,” he said. “This year is a year of turnaround for Ghana football and it starts with you. I have absolute confidence in this team, the quality your technical team has put together and all the preparations you have gone through. Don’t just go and qualify for the World Cup, but also put Ghana back where we belong by winning it. Believe in yourself and you can do it.”

He further challenged the players to embrace the responsibility of wearing the national jersey, reminding them of the legacy of former Starlets who conquered Africa and the world. “You are carrying the hopes of millions of Ghanaians. When you step onto that pitch, remember that you are not alone—an entire nation stands behind you,” he added.

Simeon-Okraku also expressed strong faith in the technical team, noting that their hard work and meticulous preparations would be key to the team’s success. “The technical team has done its part, and I trust their guidance. Listen to them, stay disciplined, and play for each other. Success will follow if you remain focused and united.”

He concluded with a passionate call for unity and belief within the squad. “Go out there with courage, play with pride, and never be afraid of any opponent. Ghana has a rich history in youth football, and it is your time to write the next chapter. Make the nation proud.”

The Black Starlets have since departed for Morocco, where they will compete against some of the continent’s best young talents, carrying with them the expectations and goodwill of a nation eager to see a return to glory.
