IPL 2026: Mitchell Starc cleared for IPL return, eyes early May comeback for Delhi Capitals

Australia’s premier fast bowler Mitchell Starc is set to join the Indian Premier League 2026 after being cleared of shoulder and elbow concerns. The left-armer is expected to travel to India on Friday, April 24.

The 36-year-old pacer is targeting a return to action for Delhi Capitals in their clash against Rajasthan Royals on May 1, provided he completes his preparation without any setbacks. It will be a big boost for the Axar Patel-led side to have a bowler of Starc’s calibre to lead their bowling line-up.

Starc had a pretty decent IPL 2025 for the Delhi-based franchise, picking up 14 wickets in just 11 matches at an economy rate of 10.17. He also registered his first-ever five-wicket haul in the league in the season.

Starc has been out of competitive cricket since late January following a demanding run of fixtures. He was instrumental during the The Ashes for the Aussies, where he delivered a standout performance to earn Player of the Series award, claiming 31 wickets at an impressive average of 19.93 while bowling astonishing 150+ overs across five Tests.

He then featured in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers, helping them reach the final. However, during the game against the Perth Scorchers, Starc suffered a heavy blow on his left shoulder and elbow while attempting a catch.

After taking a break in February, the pacer experienced discomfort upon returning to bowling, delaying his IPL arrival and creating uncertainty around his participation. The situation also sparked speculation, prompting Starc to address the issue publicly and express frustration over heavily misinformed opinions regarding his absence.

In a positive update for DC, Starc has recently completed a full week of pain-free bowling sessions at home in Sydney. He is expected to undergo a brief period of acclimatisation and gradually increase his workload after arriving in India, before being match-ready for the Jaipur fixture.
