Punjab Kings were dealt a blow in their clash against the Mumbai Indians when vice captain Shashank Singh had to walk off the field injured after being hit on his head by the ball.

The final ball of the powerplay, bowled by Vijaykumar Vyshak, saw Naman Dhir push one down to mid off to scamper for a single after already having got 14 runs off  the over. Captain Shreyas Iyer, who had stationed himself at mid-off, hurriedly picked up and threw the ball at the non-striker’s end. After missing the stumps, the ball bounced awkwardly off one of the pitches and hit Shashank on the head. Shashank was backing up the throw at square leg. He then had to be taken off the field, holding an ice pack to his head.

There wasn’t much time needed for Shashank to be back on the field, though. The Chhattisgarh-born joined the field and also came in to bowl the 14th over of the match. He made an instant impact, sending the well-set Naman Dhir packing for 50 off 31.

Being put into bat first, the Mumbai Indians had a slow powerplay, finishing at 48/2. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav in consecutive deliveries in a fantastic opening spell, where he just gave four runs in two overs.
