'Had so much money and still bought these players' - Virender Sehwag rips apart KKR for poor form of star-studded batting lineup

After four losses on the bounce for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), former India batter Virender Sehwag has given a strong opinion on the mistakes being committed by the franchise in the ongoing 2026 season of the Indian Premier League. Notably, in five games played, KKR haven’t managed to win a single encounter thus far, and their only point on the table came after they were awarded a point for a rain-abandoned game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6.

Sehwag believes that the root cause of KKR’s winless streak lies in the failure of their batting unit, especially at the top. He has critcised the utility of Cameron Green, who has been in pathetic form with the bat, and the case with the ball is no different as well. Sehwag believes that KKR must confront that they were mistaken when they spent a whopping sum of INR 25.20 crore for signing the Australian all-rounder.

“If you had that much money and still bought these players, spending INR 25.20 crore on Cameron Green, then now he has become a liability. If you play him, he is not performing. If you don’t play him, people will question why you spent so much money and then benched him. But there is no shame in accepting a mistake,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“Just admit it – you made a mistake by spending so much on Cameron Green. Drop him and try someone else. His bowling is not contributing much either, and it’s not like his presence is making the team combination look great because of both his batting and bowling,” the former India cricketer added.

Drop Green and play Tim Seifert instead: Sehwag

Suggesting a quick fix to reconstruct their batting unit in a hope to amend the mistakes, Sehwag believes that KKR should keep Green as a bench warmer while giving a chance to Kiwi opener Tim Seifert.

“So I feel you should bench him and play Tim Seifert instead. Recently, you saw him perform well for New Zealand. Those same two openers played aggressive innings. Bring both of them in and let them open. Then bring Ajinkya Rahane at number three, [Rovman] Powell at four, and push [Angkrish] Raghavanshi further down. That way, if Rahane gets out, Raghavanshi can come in, and if someone else gets out, then Powell or Rinku [Singh] can come in,” he concluded.

The Ajinkya Rahane-led unit will be playing their next game against Gujarat Titans on April 17 at the gigantic Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
