IPL 2026: ‘I am not a machine’ - Mohammed Shami makes grounded remark after match-winning spell

Mohammed Shami delivered a match-winning performance in the Indian Premier League 2026 clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, April 5 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

After being adjudged Player of the Match in the thrilling encounter, Shami remained grounded and made a candid remark about his performance. The experienced pacer produced a sensational spell, dismantling SRH’s top order with precision and control. In his four overs, he conceded just nine runs while picking up the crucial wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, effectively breaking the backbone of the opposition’s batting lineup early in the innings.

“I am not a machine. My season can go up and down. I have performed well in the last few years. People have not noticed that it’s different. But I always try to do well,” said Shami as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Shami was traded from SRH to LSG for INR 10 crore ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. The experienced pacer endured a difficult IPL 2025 season, where he struggled with form and fitness issues due to injury setbacks. Reflecting on his resurgence, Shami credited his return to rhythm to consistent match practice and improved fitness levels. He emphasised that regular game time has helped him regain confidence, rhythm, and control with the ball, allowing him to perform at his best once again in the ongoing season.

“If you want to play, it’s important to be in touch with the game. If you’re fit, you can work on your skills. That’s why I played all the domestic games,” said Shami.

Shami revealed that he consciously relied more on variations, particularly slower deliveries, after observing their effectiveness both in his own past performances and among opposition bowlers. The conditions also worked in his favour, as slightly overcast weather helped him generate swing, making his spell even more dangerous. The 35-year-old emphasised that experience and skill remain crucial at the highest level, especially in adapting to match situations.

He also highlighted the importance of a positive team environment, stating that he feels comfortable within the LSG setup. Following a defeat in their opening game, Shami noted that the recent win was vital in building momentum for the side. The veteran pacer is set to return to action on Thursday, April 9, when LSG face Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.

“Without skill or experience, nothing happens. As far as Lucknow is concerned, it is my second home. So it doesn’t take much time to match up. I’m happy. We lost our last game; winning this game was key to building momentum,” said Shami.
