India’s Lakshya Sen stands one match away from a place in history as he prepares to contest the men’s singles final of the All England Open in Birmingham. Victory on Sunday would make the 24-year-old only the third Indian man to lift the prestigious title, joining the legendary Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand.
Padukone became the first Indian champion at the tournament in 1980 after defeating Indonesia’s Liem Swie King in the final. More than two decades later, Gopichand followed in his footsteps by beating China’s Chen Hong in the 2001 summit clash. Since then, no Indian male shuttler has managed to capture the crown.
Sen now has the opportunity to end that long wait.
