Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s name loomed large on the 2026 U19 World Cup, and there was little until the final to justify that top billing. Then in a space of 80 balls he faced in the final against England, and inside of 25 overs, the teen wonder stamped a defining seal on the event, hitting 15 sixes and 15 fours for an awe-inspiring 175 that nobody who watched or heard of, will be allowed to forget. The 14-year-old proved that he was every bit the hype at Harare. His flying start took India to 411, a U19 knock-out game record. England would make a valiant attempt, their No.5 batsman Caleb Falconer would score a 67-ball 115 but that was too little, too late. England would fall 100 runs short as India clinched their sixth U19 World Cup title. This was Sooryavanshi’s day. The boy who hit a six on the first ball of his IPL debut, played like he has always done. Meet the India U-19 World Cup winners “We just follow our process and play our natural games. Only players know how hard we have worked … I had faith in my skills that I can contribute in big games and today it happened,” he would say after the triumph. Read | Tale of two 175s: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi does a Kapil Dev With the title on the line and expectations weighing heavily, the child prodigy saved his most emphatic statement for the final making this a Very Special — VS being his initial — World Cup. The 175 was also a neat hat-tip to India’s first World Cup winner, and this inning, albeit in juniors, will resonate as much as Kapil Dev’s 175 at Tunbridge Wells. As for the other celebrated World Cup hero, MS Dhoni’s rise from Ranchi had seen an influx of cricketers from the country’s backwaters. Sooryavanshi’s emergence from an even remote corner of the country is a sign that cricket in the country has a deeper network than the railways. He hails from Tajpur, in Bihar’s Samastipur district. His village, in one of the most poverty-ridden parts of the country, had no cricket academy or a club or anyone who could guide him. (PHOTO: ICC) All Sooryavanshi had was a cricket-loving father Sanjeev, who was willing to move mountains to fulfil his son’s dream. He was only nine when his father, sensing his talent, put him in a club in Samastipur. The facilities were modest. So he would take him thrice a week to an academy in Patna, 90 km away. He would take local bowlers too, so that he could practice. “My mother would sleep at 11 at night and wake up at 2 in the morning so that she could cook for me. My father quit his job, woke up early in the morning. My elder brother took over my father’s responsibilities. It was tough at home, but my father insisted, ‘You’ll make it’,” he once told this newspaper.Story continues below this ad Read | India win U-19 World Cup: Meet the teen champions A delighted father would talk about his son’s “aitihasik paari (historic inning)” and the proud moment for the family and the country. “I am sure he will play for India one day, with all the hard work he is putting in,” Sanjeev would say. Not just the talent, Sooryavanshi’s mindset too sets him apart. His Rajasthan Royals coach and legendary Indian batsman, Rahul Dravid would say: “To someone like that, you are actually trying to tell him to just explore the edges of your talent. It is incredible. But I think the gift of mindset, that freedom, it’s special,” he said. He then explained the other virtues that set him apart. “He’s obviously got a high back lift, that’s very obvious. A really good hand-eye coordination in terms of judgment of length. What you look for in a young batsman is how quick he is in picking length,” he said. “A combination of high back-lift and ability to pick length gives him the power and he seems to have a natural strength,” Dravid said. All the traits shone through his whirlwind 175, a knock that is a metaphor, like Kapil’s 175 in the 1983 World Cup, 43 summers apart.Story continues below this ad The number 175 has an aura in Indian cricket. It’s the most romanticised knock in the country’s white-ball history. That was a crucial game against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup final. But it became the metaphor of India’s fighting spirit that ultimately ended up in the most romantic World Cup triumph in white-ball history, the first step India made to become the most powerful cricketing nation, three decades or so later. Forty-three years later, in Zimbabwe, another 175 was born. Kapil’s monumental effort had gotten Indians to believe that anything was possible. Suryavanshi’s is a harbinger of supremacy that India could wield for generations to come. Kapil was 24 then, a star already and a one of a kind. His knock, walking into bat at 9/4 shocked the world, because no one imagined that an Indian could render a knock of this proportion. While Kapil enjoyed the freedom of no expectations, Sooryavanshi’s journey to the final had been marked by tentativeness rather than blowing if trumpets. Scores of 2, 72, 40, 52, 30 and 68 underlined his consistency, but the defining innings — the one that truly bent a game to his will — had remained elusive. In the final, under sunshine and scrutiny, the left-hander bridged that gap with a knock that blended composure, power and rare clarity of thought. His hundred arrived in just 55 balls, but what followed truly elevated the innings. Instead of easing off, Sooryavanshi shifted gears with breathtaking clarity. He took only 16 more deliveries to surge from 100 to 150, racing to 151 off 71 balls as fours and sixes came in rapid succession. It was acceleration without chaos — power applied with precision.Story continues below this ad He eventually fell for a majestic 175 off 80 balls, caught off Manny Lumsden, but not before he had entertained everyone at the Harare Sports Club and millions in India who saw Sooryavanshi do a Kapil Dev.
