Barca had dominated possession without finding a way through until substitute Fermin Lopez played a wonderful pass through the Santander backline and Torres, captain for the evening, rounded goalkeeper Jokin Ezkieta to slot in.
Santander are top of the second division in Spain and hoping to return to La Liga next season for the first time since 2012.
Hansi Flick’s Barca won last season’s cup final in style against rivals Real and will learn of their opponents in the last eight on Monday.
