Jorrel Hato Seeking Game Time Guarantees Before Arsenal Move

Arsenal have always been curious about Ajax wonderkid Jorrel Hato. However, the Dutch defender is unlikely to think about moving to the Emirates unless he gets specific promises regarding minutes in the first-team.

Open to a Premier League move, the 18-year-old has recently played left-back for Ajax. According to reports, Arsenal and Chelsea have both started talks with his agents; the road to regular football seems to be the main stumbling block.

Hato has made it clear that he views Arsenal as the most suitable destination for his development, especially given the presence of compatriot Jurrien Timber, a player he considers an idol. However, despite his admiration for the project in North London, Hato is unwilling to make the leap unless he gets a clear definition of his role in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

🚨 Arsenal are really keen to sign Jorrel Hato and would be loathed to miss out on player they have been tracking since he was 15-years-old.

Last summer, Hato was already on Arsenal’s radar, with the club eager to reinforce their unstable left-back department. However, the timing wasn’t right. Hato chose to remain at Ajax to continue his development, and Arsenal turned their attention to Riccardo Calafiori instead.

The Italian defender’s debut season was marred by injury setbacks, which left the door open for Hale End graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly to step in. The young Englishman grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has since established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice left-back going into the 2025/26 campaign.

With Gabriel and William Saliba entrenched as the central defensive pairing and Timber expected to slot in at right-back, there appears to be little room for Hato to walk straight into the starting lineup. And for a player of his profile and ambition, a bench role simply won’t suffice.

While Arsenal remain his preferred destination, Chelsea are also monitoring the situation. The Blues are looking to add depth and youth to their defensive unit, and Hato fits the bill. Unlike Arsenal, Chelsea might be able to offer more immediate opportunities given the flux in their defensive ranks under Enzo Maresca.

Despite this, sources close to the player suggest Hato’s heart lies with Arsenal — but only if the conditions are right. The young defender’s camp is keeping their options open, hinting at some dissatisfaction over the lack of a clear path to first-team action in North London.

Another complicating factor is Jorrel Hato’s versatility. While he’s operated as a left-back at Ajax, he’s naturally a central defender and has also shown glimpses of potential in midfield. However, a move into midfield seems unlikely at Arsenal with the impending arrival of Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, who is expected to anchor the Gunners’ midfield for years to come.

That leaves left-back as the most logical role for Hato at Arsenal — but one currently occupied by a thriving Lewis-Skelly. Arteta is unlikely to disrupt the development of one of the club’s brightest academy graduates without good reason. Arsenal are in a tricky position. They clearly admire Hato’s talent and believe in his long-term potential, but offering game time guarantee in a squad with established starters is not easy.

It’s a classic case of timing. Hato wants the move, Arsenal want the player, but the present landscape at the Emirates makes an immediate breakthrough unlikely. Unless a change in strategy or formation opens up more minutes, the Gunners may risk losing out on a player who could be a mainstay in defence for the next decade.

Jorrel Hato’s desire to join Arsenal is evident, but unless the Gunners can provide clarity over his role and realistic game time expectations, they may fall behind in the race. Chelsea are lurking with intent, and with other clubs likely to express interest in the coming weeks, Arsenal will need to make a decisive move if they want to secure one of the most promising defenders in European football.
