Arsenal hoping to seal deal as they line up raid for Ajax wonderkid Jorrel Hato in highly-rated defending boost for the 2025/26 season. Mikel Arteta’s side is preparing to face another challenging campaign across several fronts this coming season and are looking to add some young, versatile and intelligent legs to their defense and Hato fits the bill.

The 19-year-old Dutch prodigy has become one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders after a stellar season in the Eredivisie. Able to play comfortably at the left side of the central defence or as a left fullback Jorrel Hato plays with tactical and technical abilities well ahead of his age. Use of the ball, technical quality and the leadership he shows on the pitch have all been qualities that Arsenal’s scouting network have paid close attention to in the last 12 months as he has developed.

Ajax are still reluctant to part with the teenager. The Amsterdam club see Jorrel Hato as part of the foundations of their long-term rebuilding project in the wake of the recent turmoil. Being the captain of the senior squad on multiple occasions already in the 2024/25 season, he was the youngest Ajax captain in years. But with finances tightening and Premier League interest rising, Ajax may need to reconsider their stance if a serious offer compels them to act.

The Gunners reportedly plan to open negotiations with a £35 million proposal. Although Arsenal haven’t submitted an official bid, intermediaries have already initiated informal discussions. Ajax will likely push for a fee closer to £45 million, especially since Hato remains under contract until 2028.

Arteta has always enjoyed using players in the defensive third that are graceful and talented on the ball, tactically and sound, and it is clear that these are capabilities that Hato boasts in abundance. He’s just 19, but he plays like a vet and carries himself like one. He is also left-footed which adds value to Arsenal as we have many right-footed centre-backs, such as William Saliba and Ben White.

Hato’s versatility invokes similar multi-positional skill sets in the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior. Keen with a good football brain, solid positioning and tracking make him a good target for a team that plays it up from the back. He’s also demonstrated leadership skills for both club and for Holland in youth internationals.

🚨 One source told @caughtoffside: “Arsenal has initiated official discussions with Ajax & held positive talks with Jorrel Hato’s representatives. A six-year contract proposal is on the table & the player is carefully evaluating Arsenal’s long-term project.” pic.twitter.com/YluSq9IAIN

Amid the rumours of a departure for Gabriel Magalhães, Arsenal need to keep their options open in defense. If we sign Jorrel Hato, not only will it solve a potential deficiency, but it also contributes perfectly to the overall strategy of creating a young, world class team that can dominate for many years to come.

Although Ajax press on with their attempts to persuade Hato to remain in Amsterdam for at least another season, the lure of Premier League football, sprinkled with Arsenal’s impressive record of helping to groom young players—might ultimately prove too tempting for the defender to ignore.

Jorrel Hato is a smart investment by Arsenal—one that yields both short-term utility and long-term ambition. At 19, he has already made more than 50 senior appearances, captained Ajax and competed with some of Europe’s elite. He has all of the qualities to fit what I expect a central defender to be, and his aura is huge.

Still, the move from the Eredivisie to the Premier League is difficult at the best of times, and for defenders in particular. Even elite talent can have trouble adjusting to the pace, physicality, and strategic complexity of English football. Arsenal would have to carefully integrate Hato into the squad and mentor him, not to mention hold back development.

If they can strike a deal at the right value, Arsenal wouldn’t just be signing a defender but, perhaps, a future leader as well. The question is not of Jorrel Hato’s caliber. It’s whether Arsenal are prepared to gamble on his long-term development and help him grow gently into their ambitious project.
