Arsenal Viktor Gyokeres chase intensifies amid £85m clause

Arsenal have increased their interest in Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres as Mikel Arteta seeks out a solution to the club’s longstanding centre-forward problems. The Swedish international is now one of the deadliest frontmen in Europe and his exploits in Portugal have piqued the interest of clubs across the continent – including those in north London.

Multiple reports claim Arsenal are monitoring Gyokeres ahead of a possible summer move. With Gabriel Jesus failing to deliver consistent form and Kai Havertz proving more effective as a hybrid forward, the Gunners now aim to act decisively in their search for a genuine No.9. But Sporting CP will not sell their star man on the cheap. The 26-year-old has a release clause of €100million (£85m) written into his contract and the Portuguese club are refusing to budge on their valuation of their player.

Andrea Berta and Arsenal’s recruitment team are thought to have watched Gyokeres closely during the 2024–25 campaign. Within the club there is a feeling that he should fit the tactical blueprint of Arteta, who wants a high-pressing, physically dominant striker with intelligent movement and a tireless work ethic. Arsenal could find themselves competing with other elite clubs, like Chelsea and Atlético Madrid, but their interest is serious. And with Champions League football achieved, the Gunners feel that then now is the summer to splash the cash.

It’s been an outstanding season for Viktor Gyokeres in the Primeira Liga. The ex-Coventry City front man was their highest scorer with 28 goals and 9 assists in every competition and emerged as one of the continent’s most accomplished strikers. His capacity to come deep, where he can link play, and burst into the box with venom has been central to Sporting’s title-winning season.

Arsenal are drawn to him not just by his tally of goals but by his physical profile. Standing at 6’2”, Gyokeres has the height and power Arsenal currently lacks upfront. And his relentless pressing also corresponds to Arteta’s longing for a forward who takes the bull by the horns from the front — something their title-chasing side has lacked.

But there are worries about cost. Sporting’s €100m clause may block negotiations if Arsenal fail to agree on a structured deal. Traditionally cautious spenders under the Kroenke regime, Arsenal could look to include performance-related add-ons or pay the fee in instalments in a bid to spread the cost. That said, the club have shown heightened ambition in recent windows though with record-breaking deals for Declan Rice and by taking gambles on the likes of Kai Havertz. If Arteta thinks Gyokeres is the final part of the jigsaw, Arsenal might just be willing to meet Sporting’s demands.

There are few grounds for arguing that Viktor Gyokeres does not fit the mould of what Arsenal are crying out for — a dependable, work-hungry, goal-hungry centre-forward that could flourish in a fast-paced Premier League system. His displays in Portugal suggest a player keen for another challenge, and his qualities would improve Arteta’s arsenal. Still, the cost runs high, and Arsenal will need to be sure he can perform at the same level outside the Liga Portugal.

That being said, this doesn’t sound like much of a risk as much as it does a statement. Arsenal want to win now. They’ve arguably been one high-class striker away from any glory in recent seasons and the right addition in that department might just swing the scales. If the club are serious about competing with Manchester City for years to come then throwing Arteta even more resources in a forward like Gyokeres might be the kind of leap they need to make.
