Arsenal in serious talks with Thomas Partey over a contract extension as the Gunners look to tie the midfielder down beyond his current agreement – which runs until June 2025. Partey is also viewed by the Gunners as a potential key to the puzzle of their own developing midfield as manager Mikel Arteta appreciates 30-year-old’s expertise, tactical nous and capacity to pass and dictate the tempo from deep.

Partey has suffered with muscle injuries in his first season at the Emirates stadium but he is still highly regarded in the club. The North Londoners are likely to propose a short-term extension in order to monitor Partey’s fitness over the coming months rather than commit to him long term, sources say. This would enable Arsenal to continue to have him in the mix and also maintain room to move in midfield going forward.

The way Partey fits into Arteta’s structure has changed with the emergence of Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard’s development. But Partey’s calm and composure on the ball, positional awareness and physical presence have been integral in maintaining a balance to Arsenal’s swashbuckling forward football. Recent performances late in the 2024/25 campaign have reminded supporters and staff alike what he can do when fully fit.

With Arsenal hoping to challenge on multiple fronts next season, experienced back-up is clearly a key priority. It’s not just sentiment driving this—Arsenal wants to keep their midfield steady, especially in big games where controlling the middle of the park is crucial.

The news of a potential Thomas Partey contract extension marks the first common ground reached by both sides this summer, as Arsenal wonders who else they can afford to add to the squad. With Jorginho expected to leave and Mohamed Elneny unlikely to play regularly, Partey would bridge the gap between the youthful energy Arsenal may have in the future and the wisdom the team needs.

Where Declan Rice has rapidly made himself indispensable in midfield, Arteta has often talked about the significance of differentials. Arsenal’s Champions League dreams and a demanding domestic schedule make squad depth not a luxury, but a necessity.

There are also rumours Arsenal are looking at potential midfield targets this summer, but club sources insist Partey’s future is not reliant on getting other players in. The club views him as a complementary presence who helps develop younger players like Charlie Patino and Ethan Nwaneri, both set to play bigger roles in the senior setup.

The notion of a Thomas Partey contract extension makes sense if you put personal feelings aside and look at it strategically — and if Arsenal handles it well. Partey impacts the team heavily on and off the field, especially in major games where his composure often dictates the tempo. However, Arsenal cannot overlook his injury history. They must balance the potential benefits of extending a player who, although undeniably brilliant, has missed large parts of more than one season, against the possible risks.

A one-year deal loaded with performance-based incentives may be the perfect compromise. It permits the club to hang on to his powers without binding itself too far either fiscally or tactically. This move also shows Arsenal’s clear pivot toward a more results-focused, pragmatic approach—where every contract and every role ties directly to performance and availability.

This, ultimately, isn’t a matter of nostalgia or loyalty — it’s a matter of competitive balance. If Partey can simply stay healthy and be the Partey he is capable of being, he is an asset. But if injuries keep piling up, Arsenal must act quickly and change course.
