Enzo Fernandez eyed by Real Madrid as Luka Modric prepares exit

Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez as their no. 1 replacement for departing Luka Modric this summer. The Spanish side believe that Fernandez could be the man to fix their midfield for years to come and have been further encouraged by his recent comments about his love for the club.

Having served for over a decade, Luka Modric is finally leaving Real Madrid this summer. The Croatian mastermind has been the focal point in Madrid’s recent success both at home and in Europe. At 38 years old, though, the club has reluctantly decided to move on without him. Now that Madrid has confirmed Modric’s exit, the club needs to shore up the midfield with new, vibrant talent.

As per Spanish media, Real Madrid have shortlisted two primary candidates to replace Modric. Those candidates are Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Bayer Leverkusen’s Exequiel Palacios. Although both midfielders possess quality and pace, it is Fernandez who has resonated with Madrid the most.

Enzo Fernandez, 24, arrived to Chelsea in 2023 in a record breaking £106.8m transfer from Benfica. Since then, he has been a staple in Chelsea’s midfield, mixing technique with excellent work rate. Despite Chelsea’s inconsistencies this season, Fernandez remains one of their most reliable players.

Comments from Fernandez in recent times have added fire to rumors of a possible switch to Madrid. Although he refrained from assenting to any talks, his description of the Spanish giants as one of the “best clubs in the world” has been read as an indication of willingness to join them on a transfer. This has allegedly made Real Madrid push for the player more forcefully as they try to re-design their midfield.

Chelsea are in a precarious position right now. Their place in the Champions League is however not final and they have a couple of big games, a Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest and the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis. Failure to qualify for European competition next season could cause financial headaches and prompt them to listen to offers for key names, including Fernandez.

Real Madrid reportedly are keeping a close eye on Chelsea’s performances in the days to come. In case Chelsea fails to qualify for the Champions League, Madrid may intensify their pursuit, hoping that Chelsea would be more willing to negotiate given the financial constraints.

But the sale of Fernandez will not be cheap. Chelsea are likely to ask for much more than the £106.8 million they spent on him, particularly if he is still in contract for the long haul. Real Madrid will be forced to consider the expense in relation to long-term strategy and team requirements.

Although Fernandez is the preferred target, Exequiel Palacios is also in the mix. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder has enjoyed a fine campaign with Xabi Alonso and shares similar attributes: poise, vision, and tactical awareness. Palacios might be a cheaper alternative, but Madrid could opt for Fernandez’s Premier League experience and greater ceiling.

As Real Madrid gear up for life after Luka Modric, the club are targeting Enzo Fernandez as a big-name signing for their midfield. With the Argentine already making it known how much he’s a fan of Madrid, and Chelsea maybe exposed with their issues in qualifying for Europe, a summer move might be on the horizon. Whether Madrid are willing to meet Chelsea’s steep demands remains a doubt, but the groundwork for a blockbuster move appears to be underway.
