The race to finish in the top two of the points table in IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) sees Match 69, featuring the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the Mumbai Indians (MI), seemingly becoming one of the most consequential matches of the season. After all four teams heading to the playoffs were determined at the end of Match 63, this is the only match between two already qualified teams.

Punjab Kings’ top-two chances took a hit after they went down to Delhi Capitals at Jaipur itself. Shreyas Iyer’s fifty was the catalyst for Punjab’s innings, following cameos from Prabhsimran Singh and Josh Inglis. Mustafizur Rahman, Kuldeep Yadav, and Vipraj Nigam took important wickets in the death overs, but Marcus Stoinis rose to the occasion. Stoinis smashed an unbeaten 44 at the death to lead PBKS past the 200-run mark.

DC’s chase was a true-blue team effort. KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis provided an important start, but Harpreet Brar struck back in the middle overs. Karun Nair and Sameer Rizvi then took the mantle upon themselves to steer the chase. Even when the required rate looked out of reach, Rizvi found boundaries at crucial moments to keep DC in the hunt and eventually take them home in the last over.

MI’s last match, however, was a comfortable win over DC at the Wankhede Stadium. MI’s start was quite slow, but Suryakumar Yadav stabilised things in the middle overs. He and Tilak Varma kept MI steady until Naman Dhir joined Yadav. The two added a whopping 48 runs in the last two overs of the innings to take MI to a total that was decidedly above par.

DC’s chase never got going. The Capitals lost three wickets in the powerplay itself. Vipraj Nigam played a resistant and explosive hand, but his cameo ultimately wasn’t of much use. Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah took turns cleaning up the middle order and the tail to send MI into the playoffs. The MI-DC game confirmed MI as the last team to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2025, and DC as the last team to be eliminated.

Ace leg spinnerĀ Yuzvendra Chahal was rather inexplicably left out of PBKS’ last game, but his good record against Suryakumar Yadav might tempt them to bring him back. So far in the IPL, Yadav has made 83 runs off 71 balls at a strike rate of 116.90, while being dismissed thrice at an average of 27.67.

2. Shreyas Iyer vs Jasprit Bumrah

Punjab skipperĀ Shreyas Iyer is in an arguably select list of batters with a very good record against the ace pacer. Iyer has scored 64 runs in 46 balls at a strike rate of 139.13 and has been dismissed just once by Jasprit Bumrah in the IPL.Ā
