Eshan Malinga was one of the standout performers with the ball as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 42 runs at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow in the 65th match of the IPL, played on May 24.

Eshan first made an impact by running out RCB captain Rajat Patidar. He bowled a pinpoint yorker that Patidar squeezed out and attempted a quick single. Eshan picked up the ball in his follow-through and hit the stumps directly at the bowler’s end, catching Patidar short of his crease.

He then claimed the wicket of pinch-hitter Romario Shepherd, who was dismissed for a golden duck. Eshan bowled a slower delivery at 118 kph, and Shepherd, early into his drive, failed to keep it down. Eshan completed a brilliant return catch off his own bowling.

Eshan Malinga now has 10 wickets in six games in the IPL 2025

Later, he removed Tim David, who was caught by Heinrich Klaasen at long-on after scoring just one run off five balls. Eshan’s first two overs went for 27 runs without a wicket, but skipper Pat Cummins showed faith in him by handing him the ball in the 16th and 18th overs. In those two overs, Eshan conceded only 14 runs (10 runs and four leg byes), while picking up two wickets and executing a run-out.

Every SRH bowler contributed to the win, with each picking up at least one wicket. Captain Pat Cummins led from the front, taking three crucial wickets. He dismissed Phil Salt early and returned in the 19th over to remove Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya. Cummins finished with figures of 3/28 from four overs, maintaining an economy rate of 7.00.

For RCB, only the opening partnership showed any resistance, as the rest of the batting lineup failed to make a significant impact.
